To commemorate this year’s World Blood Donor Day, the Medical Laboratory Department led by Mrs Yemisi Adegoke collaborated with the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service to organise a Blood Donation Drive and awareness walk to Ikorodu Garage Roundabout.
Initiated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Blood Donor Day aims to raise global awareness of the need for safe transfusion of blood and blood products while celebrating the critical contributions made by voluntary and unpaid blood donors.
This year’s slogan, “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives,’ reinforces the aim to draw attention to the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and enhancing solidarity within communities.
Speaking at the event, The Medical Director/CEO, Dr Taiwo Hassan emphasized the need for regular blood donation which is crucial to saving human life during medical emergencies. Dr Hassan encouraged the participants to take a pledge to donate their blood and give a gift of life to others as this single gesture can create a million smiles.
Mrs Adegoke stated that this day raises awareness of the need for safe blood transfusion, thanks to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. She also emphasized “Donating just one pint of blood can save more than one person’s life”.
A certificate of Appreciation was also presented to regular voluntary donors and lots of gifts to appreciate all the voluntary donors in attendance.
