IKORODU TEACHERS’ LOUNGE LAUNCHED: OVER 100 TEACHERS IN LAGOS EAST GRADUATE FROM SENATOR ABIRU INNOVATION LAB ®™√ INN Nigeria © img 20230402 wa00105988244950709461873 Over 100 teachers in public and private schools across Lagos East Senatorial District, who enrolled for the 2022 Class of the Lagos East Teachers Fellowship (Cohort 2) at the Senator Abiru Innovation Lab (SAIL), graduated on Friday after completing their training that lasted for over three months. Teachers, numbering over 1,500 applied for the training. 950 got enrolled for the online class for 30 days. 120 outstanding participants got admitted into physical classes, while 105 graduated. Senator Abiru Innovation Lab (SAIL), is a first-of-its-kind Community Innovation Space, set up in partnership with renowned technology and Social Enterprise company, The Co-creation Hub (Cc-HUB) to train youths in the Lagos East senatorial district on relevant digital and innovation skills and build the best entrepreneurs that can compete in the ever-dynamic global economy. Lagos East Teachers’ Fellowship, is one of the leading cutting-edge programmes at SAIL. In his opening remarks, the SAIL Project consultant, Mr Deji Abisola, said that “The Lagos East Teachers Fellowship has provided an invaluable platform for educators to learn, grow, and develop their skills. This year's graduates have been trained in Inquiry-Based Learning, a cutting-edge pedagogical approach that encourages students to actively engage with the learning process. This dynamic method is designed to stimulate curiosity and foster critical thinking, preparing the young minds of today for the challenges of tomorrow. “In addition to Inquiry-Based Learning, our graduates (Lagos East Teachers’ Fellowship) have also been equipped with the knowledge and tools to integrate technology into their classrooms effectively. This is particularly significant, as we live in a rapidly evolving digital age where technology has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. By embracing the use of technology in education, we are opening doors to a myriad of opportunities that will enhance the learning experiences of our students and ultimately, shape the future of our society”. Abisola also announced the launch of the Ikorodu Teachers Lounge. According to him, it is a virtual community that will further deepen knowledge sharing and interactions among teachers who passed through the SAIL. “Today, we also have the pleasure of launching Ikorodu Teachers' Lounge. This innovative space, made possible by the visionary leadership of Senator Tokunbo Abiru through his endowment pillar platform, the TACT Foundation, will serve as a hub for educators to connect, collaborate, and share best practices. The Ikorodu Teachers' Lounge is a testament to our commitment to fostering a strong community of educators who are dedicated to the continuous improvement of teaching and learning” Abisola disclosed. Graduating participants, in their valedictory speeches, eulogized the visionary leadership of Distinguished Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA, for conceptualizing SAIL, particularly the Teachers’ Fellowship programme. Adedeji Owoyade, one of the Valedictorians remarked, “I teach Government at Epe Senior Grammar School, Epe, Lagos State. I belong to Cohort II, Non-STEM Group I of the Lagos East Teachers’ Fellowship. The Lagos East Teachers Fellowship has greatly impacted me as a classroom teacher. “My exposure to the inquiry-based method of teaching has opened my eyes to a new way of thinking and planning. With my knowledge of Google Slides, Render Forest, Inshort, Legend, Canva, and 2D and 3D Animation, I have learnt better ways to develop and use instructional materials in my classroom. Also, my engagement with students has given them more opportunities to think, reflect and own ideas on topics and issues. It has also improved their abilities as individual learners. “My experience in the program was very educative, engaging, and impactful. I want to thank all the facilitators, for their innovative ways of teaching us. I often engage my colleagues on the new ideas learnt from the program. I hereby recommend the Lagos East Teachers Fellowship to all teachers in Ikorodu and Lagos State”. Sobowale Adefolahan Olusesan, said, “ I wish to sincerely appreciate the creativity and innovativeness of our indefatigable Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru for putting a premium on human capital development, especially for us teachers to learn new pedagogies and improve the learning outcomes for students”. Blessing Osoba, a Biology teacher at Olomu Community Senior Secondary School, Ibeju-Lekki opined “ With a lot of hands-on training in digital learning applications such as a Reindeer forest, In-shot, Canva, and Legend for instructional designs as well as materials to facilitate learning, my experience in the Lagos East Teachers’ Fellowship has been truly rewarding for my career. In addition, using digital labs, Google Classroom and Quiz has been a game changer for me, helping me engage learners in better exploration of scientific concepts and assess my learners’ understanding”. Qudus Bello, a Further Mathematics teacher at Community Senior High School, Orimedu, was part of the Lagos East Teachers’ Fellowship (STEM) Cohort 2. He said, “Through the fellowship program, I was able to master the art of inquiry-based learning and apply it to deepen my students' imaginations and boost their creativity. I was also exposed to using a digital laboratory as instructional material for science practicals which has improved the learning experience and outcomes”. Senator Abiru, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Constituency Matters, Dr (Otunba) Saheed Oladapo Ibikunle, congratulated the teachers on the successful completion of their training. He admonished them to impact their students with the skills they have acquired. Dr Ibikunle, who is a seasoned educational administrator, charged the teachers to explore various teaching methods in improving learning outcomes in their students. He declared that what a student does not know is what he has not been taught. He concluded by tasking the teachers to adopt continuous capacity development as a lifestyle. The Ikorodu Teachers' Lounge, an initiative aimed at providing a space for teachers in Lagos East to work, study, and collaborate, was officially launched at the event also. Chinyelu Akpa, Practice Lead for Education at re:learn, an initiative of CcHub, expressed her gratitude to the Senator for creating a rare opportunity for teachers in the district. The Ikorodu Teachers' Lounge offers registered teachers free access to the SAIL Lab, a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide an ideal environment for study, work, and research. Teachers can utilize the lab for free between 3-5 pm daily, although booking is required to ensure a smooth and organized experience for all users. In addition to providing a space for individual work and study, the Ikorodu Teachers' Lounge aims to foster a sense of community among educators in Lagos East. Every Friday, the Lounge will host community events specifically geared towards the professional development and growth of local teachers. These events will facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, and networking, ultimately contributing to the improvement of education in the district. Chinyelu Akpa emphasized the importance of supporting teachers, stating, "By providing this space and organizing these community events, we hope to empower teachers with the resources and connections they need to thrive in their profession. We believe that when teachers are supported, the entire education system benefits, leading to better outcomes for students and the wider community." LAGOS TEACHER EMERGES Y2022 BEST TEACHER IN NIGERIA ®™√ INN Nigeria © fb img 16657267955217726308434617646106 The Federal Ministry of Education has announced Miss Adeola Adefemi, an English Teacher with the Oke-Odo Senior High School, Alimosho in Lagos State as the Best Teacher in Nigeria at a national event held recently in Abuja to commemorate the annual World Teachers’ Day. Presenting the Award to Adefemi, Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo said the event was designed to appreciate outstanding teachers for their immeasurable contributions to the growth and development of society. Adefemi, who was rewarded with a brand-new car by the Federal Government, has an uncommon passion for promoting qualitative education. She is also regarded as a highly innovative teacher who trains children in and out of school, especially the underprivileged in her community. Mrs Bolanle Alamu of the Government Senior College, Agege, also emerged as the Y2022 Second Runner-up for Best School Administrator in the Public School Category. Mrs Alamu had earlier won the 2021 Senior Secondary School Administrator Award during the Lagos State Teachers’ Merit Award held in June 2022. Another Lagos Teacher, Mr Michael Adeniyi of the Caleb British International School also emerged as the first runner-up in the Best Teacher, Private Senior Secondary School Category for Y2022.

LAGOS TEACHERS ENDORSE SANWO-OLU FOR SECOND TERM, CREDITS GOVERNOR FOR MAKING TEACHING REWARDING ®™√ INN Nigeria © 6666666666555gg5442166002809653605 The event marking World Teachers’ Day in Lagos State turned into a platform to share testimonies of the positive transformation recorded in the State’s teaching service by the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Teachers cheerfully shared their experiences in the last three years, giving Sanwo-Olu a pass mark in raising the standards of education through investment in infrastructure and capacity building. At the symposium organised by the Lagos wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) at the NUT Pavilion in Ikeja, Lagos teachers unanimously threw their weight behind Sanwo-Olu, endorsing the Governor’s re-election bid. <p> Comrade Hassan Akintoye, NUT Lagos chairman, who spoke on behalf of the teachers, said the Sanwo-Olu administration prioritised teachers’ welfare and committed unprecedented investment in education and teaching. <p> Akintoye said not only had the teaching environment been made more conducive for teachers, but he noted that there had also been improvement in the performance of pupils in national examinations. <p> The NUT chief said the Governor met and fulfilled the majority of the demands of the teachers without any confrontation, thereby limiting the prospect of disagreement between NUT and the Government. <p> Lagos, he said, pioneered the creation of the Permanent Secretary/Tutor General position, which is the apex cadre in the teaching career, and designated six slots for teachers across the six Education Districts in the State. <p> Akintoye added that Sanwo-Olu’s approval of career harmonisation in teaching service placed thousands of Lagos teachers on grade Level 17 – the highest level. This, he said, made Lagos the pace-setting State in the transformation of the teaching profession. <p> He said: “In Lagos, teachers have not had any major demands which the Government has not prioritised. It is only in Lagos teachers are promoted and get salaries of the new grade level before the promotion letters get to them. It is in Lagos that thousands of teachers are on Grade Level 17 when their colleagues in other states are either stagnant at Level 14 or demoted. <p> “On the occasion of World Teachers’ Day in Lagos, it is about showing appreciation to the leadership of the State. We are using this opportunity to tell our Governor that we have a large number in the teaching service, and this has never been a burden to the system. Come February 2023, we will mobilise not only ourselves but also our families and relatives to make the election work in your favour.” <p> NUT National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, sent a note of appreciation to Sanwo-Olu on behalf of Lagos teachers, stressing that Lagos Government had lifted the teaching profession and set enviable standards in the State. Represented by Comrade Titi Adebanjo, NUT National Secretary, Amba said: “In some states, apart from the Governors being afraid to meet with teachers, Sanwo-Olu can walk confidently among teachers because he has raised not only the standards of teaching in Lagos, the Governor has also improved on the welfare package for teachers to make teaching rewarding.” NUT National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, sent a note of appreciation to Sanwo-Olu on behalf of Lagos teachers, stressing that Lagos Government had lifted the teaching profession and set enviable standards in the State. He said his administration’s efforts towards boosting teachers’ capacity through capacity building led to over 10,000 teachers benefiting from various initiatives to refresh their teaching skills. <p> The Governor said priorities were placed on the career progression of teachers in Lagos, making their promotion an annual exercise while ensuring prompt implementation of benefits and earnings due to them. He said: “Today, I join our resilient and outstanding teachers in celebrating a legacy of excellence, dedication and commitment built on the foundation of a unique profession that involves the promotion of the complex personal development of young minds in preparation for future roles as responsible citizens. No Society can deliver quality education without placing premium value on its teachers. While many only expect the Almighty God to reward teachers, it is our firm resolve that our teachers must receive and enjoy the rewards for their labour, first here on earth and then, later in Heaven. <p> “As a teacher-friendly Government, we developed various initiatives to enhance teaching and further motivate our teachers. Our commitment to increasing the capacity of our teaching staff is visible through local and international training. Over 10,000 teachers have been exposed to various training programmes to hone and refresh their teaching skills. <p> To ensure that we don’t lack teachers in any subjects, we introduced an Exit-Replacement Policy, which ensures prompt recruitment of qualified teachers to replace the ones that retire. This has created employment for over 6, 000 qualified teachers in the last three years.” <p> Sanwo-Olu urged teachers to always uphold the ethics of their profession and continue to show an uncommon sense of responsibility and greater commitment to duty. <p> He pledged his administration would continue to accord priority to investment in education, while also improving the capacity and welfare of teaching personnel. The Governor said Lagos schools would further become more ICT-compliant, as he promised to expose teachers to international best practices. <p> “I urge you not to relent in your effort to impart quality knowledge to our children. You are the diamonds set in gold rings for this noble profession. As partners, we will appreciate your continued commitment and support in achieving an effective and efficient education system for the benefit of our dear citizens,” the Governor said. <p> In a show of appreciation, the teachers honoured Sanwo-Olu with an Education-friendly Award.

SANWO-OLU PROCLAIMS 10TH LAGOS ASSEMBLY, URGES LEGISLATIVE FOCUS ON PEOPLE’S WELFARE ®™√ INN Nigeria © fb img 1686077642784883121254648005931 At 11:20am on Tuesday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu proclaimed the first session of the 10th House of Assembly, following the inauguration of 40 members-elect of the State legislature by the clerk. The ceremony, Sanwo-Olu said, symbolised the continuity of the State’s democratic journey, stressing the role of legislature, as indispensable pillar of democracy, was vital in exercising the power of the people in a system of governance. The Governor said the legislative arm embodied the hopes and aspirations of the State’s residents, who elected representatives to work in partnership with other arms of the Government in the quest for good governance and prosperity of Lagos. Sanwo-Olu, who described Lagos as a citadel of resilience and dynamism, noted that the rancour-free transition from the Ninth Assembly to the 10th parliament further demonstrated the sustenance of culture of legislative vibrancy entrenched in the State’s parliament. This, he said, confirmed Lagos’ journey on the path of innovation, development and cultural diversity. He said: “Today, we come together for the proclamation of the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly. The ceremony symbolises not just the continuity of our democratic journey, but also the vital role of legislative power in our system of governance. The legislature, an indispensable pillar of our democracy, plays an essential role in the journey we have embarked upon. It is the embodiment of the hopes and aspirations of our people, a crucial partner in the quest for good governance, and a custodian of our shared democratic values. “The independent atmosphere under which the House of Assembly operates is a testament to the strength of our democracy and the commitment of Lagosians to the pursuit of excellence. I believe the 10th Assembly will meet the expectations of Lagosians and surpass the record set by the Ninth Assembly.” Clerk of the House, Barr. Bunyamin Onafeko, rated the Ninth Assembly high in legislative achievements, noting that the House, in four years, passed 46 bills into law and approved over 120 resolutions, touching range of issues, relating to welfare of the people, settlement of dues, and other socio-economic issues. Onafeko disclosed that 20 legislators from the previous Assembly returned, while 20 members were newly elected into the House. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) retained the majority in the Assembly with 38 members, while Labour Party has two members. “Legislature is the only arm of Government composed of elected representatives of the people across constituencies with statutory mandate to aggregate the concerns of the people and present their interests for implementation by the executive arm. The legislature has oversight power on other arms of Government through which it ensures transparency and accountability in allocation of public resources,” Onafeko said. Sanwo-Olu, in pursuant of Section 105(3) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, transmitted a letter to proclaim the holding of the first session of the 10th Assembly. Upon confirming the Governor’s letter, Onafeko, citing Section 92 of the Constitution and Order 2 and Rule 4 of the House, called for the nomination of Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Temitope Adewale, representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1, nominated member representing Agege Constituency 1, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, to take the chair of the Speaker. Obasa, who is returning to the House for the record sixth term, led the Eight and Ninth Assemblies as Speaker. Hon. Ogunkelu Sylvester from Epe Constituency II seconded Obasa’s nomination to return as Speaker. With no other nomination for the position, the Clerk returned Obasa as Speaker of the 10th Assembly. Hon. Desmond Elliot of Surulere Constituency 1 nominated Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, of Apapa Constituency 1, to take the seat of Deputy Speaker. Meranda was elected after her nomination was seconded by Hon. Tijani Surajudeen of Ojo Constituency 2. Upon assumption of duty as Speaker, Obasa said members’ elections were a testament to the avowed commitment to sustaining and upholding democratic values and principles through effective policy formulation, implementation and evaluation. The Speaker thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu for according respect to this House and maintaining neutrality in the internal affairs of the Assembly. Obasa also appreciated the Governor for what the Speaker described as his defence of the legislature from external forces and manipulations. He said: “The 10th Assembly has been proclaimed today. To achieve our goals, we will need to work hard, be innovative and stay united. We must abstain from being purveyors and sponsors of negative publicity about this House and publications that do no one any good, but destroy the image and reputation of the parliament as well as its leadership. “As we begin a new chapter in the history of this Assembly, I want to affirm my commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance. My goal is to ensure that every member of this Assembly is respected and valued and that we work together to provide effective representation for the people of Lagos state.” Other principal officers constituted on the first session are Majority Leader, Hon. PROTOCOL Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Executive Governor of Lagos State; our highly esteemed royal fathers here present, Captains of industry, leaders of our pace-setting party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Community leaders, Chairmen of Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas; members of Diplomatic Corps; market men and women; our energetic youths; members of the 4th Estate of the Realm; all Lagosians; ladies and gentlemen. • My distinguished colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, with profound gratitude, a strong feeling of honour, and an unwavering commitment to living up to the high standards set by you, I accept your gracious decision to elect me as the Speaker of the 10th Assembly of the Lagos State House of Assembly. We must prioritise the welfare of our constituents and ensure that our policies and legislative framework are geared towards meeting their needs. Under my leadership, this House will operate an open and inclusive administration where all members are carried along and given equal opportunity to contribute towards the development of the State. • We cannot achieve greatness working in isolation. Therefore, I encourage all the branches of government to work together in harmony to ensure that we build a Lagos State that we can all be proud of. Together, we have an opportunity to build a better Lagos, a Lagos that provides equal opportunities for all, a Lagos that is safe and secure, and a Lagos that is a model for sustainable development in Nigeria and the world. • As a responsible and responsive House of Assembly, our legislative agenda for the 10th Assembly are: To promote and strengthen legislative institutions from the State to local government level; a recommitment to the establishment of a Centre for Democracy and Legislative Studies; to review the old laws to bring them to modern reality, especially laws that established agencies, parastatals that are no longer viable; to rejig our regular legislative consultation; and to ensure prudent fiscal and financial policies through robust and engaging legislation. • Lagos is a Yoruba Land as against the assertions of some people that it is a no man’s land. Therefore, part of our legislative agenda is to ensure the translation of laws passed by this House to the Yoruba Language. We also aim at achieving our collective goals of creating a robust legislative framework that protects the interest of our people. Going forward in this wise, we are going to employ all legislative instruments for the support of the indigenes of Lagos. There would be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles and we will reverse all that are reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes. • Management staff and personnel of this great institution, I implore you to do everything in your power to ensure this administration's success. We promise to keep our campaign promises to the people of Lagos and to ensure that everyone benefits from the dividends of democracy. We appreciate the help from the media, the ‘4th Estate of the Realm’. We would appreciate it if you could assist us more by projecting a good image of this Assembly as usual. The success of this 10th Assembly should be a top priority. • To sum up my points, the sanctity of the legislature as an independent body is adequately provided for in the Constitution by the principles of Separation of Powers. In this regard, no other arm of government is allowed or permitted to interfere with the functioning and independence of the legislature in a manner that would make the legislature subs the servant subordinate. It must be underlined that in any constitutional democracy, the legislature must be allowed to operate independently, especially in line with Section 101 of the Constitution which confers on it the power to regulate itself, without violation. • To improve the Legislature and establish good governance, my colleagues and I must be steadfast and remove any obstacles in our path. I have faith that we will succeed. This esteemed House shall sustain our cordial relationship and robust cooperation with the Executive arm of government. However, let me state clearly that we shall not compromise the sanctity of our institutional independence and constitutional roles. We further expect that resolutions passed by this House are given favourable consideration just like bills passed by this House. • Lastly, I solemnly pledge my commitment to serve this House with humility, honesty, and dedication. I urge my colleagues to join me in this commitment, and together we shall leave a legacy of excellence that generations yet unborn will be proud of. I thank you all for your listening pleasure. He disclosed this on Friday while briefing journalists on activities lined up for the 2023 Law Week of the association which commenced with a jumat service at Omitoro Town Central Mosque, Ijede Road, Ikorodu. According to him, Lawyers should also contribute to charting a course of direction for the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by providing it with working materials on what the people of Nigeria expect from him. He said this prompted the theme of this year’s conference of the Bar, “2023 and Beyond the Imperative of True Federalism in Nigeria” and the lecture topic, “The 1999 Constitution, Restructuring and True Federalism: The Way Forward”. Mr Thany said they were aware that before the election, there were hues and cries about the lopsidedness in appointments, and alleged nepotism among other issues in the country. “I believe that after the lecture which centres on the 1999 constitution, restructuring, true federalism and the way forward, the federal government would have been better informed. It will serve as a raw material for the policy thrust of the federal government. “We want to contribute our little quota by the theme and lecture, to the development of Nigeria such that future generations would be proud to call Nigeria their own.” Dignitaries are billed to attend and speak at the “16th annual lecture of Chief Babatunde Olusola Benson (SAN)” held on Tuesday, June 6, which falls during Law Week. The chairman of the lecture is a former Deputy Governor of Oyo state, Iyiola Oladokun (SAN) while a former chairman of NBA Abuja and a Presidential candidate in the 2018 election of the national NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN) is the guest speaker. The discussants will include Chairman, Oyo State, INEC and chairman, Egbe Amofin, Isiaka Abiodun Olagunju (SAN); a former NBA Lagos Branch chairman, Dr Ajibade Babatunde (SAN), Chukwuka Ikuwuazom (SAN) and Olusegun Fabunmi (SAN).

Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa has been re-elected by his colleagues to lead the Lagos State House of Assembly as Speaker for the third consecutive time. The lawmakers also elected Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the Deputy Speaker. Obasa was unanimously re-elected after a proclamation of the 10th Assembly of the Lagos State House of Assembly by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was present with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and top government officials at the chamber of the House. Obasa, the most ranking member of the House, was nominated by Hon. Temitope Adewale, who was seconded by Sylvester Ogunkelu. Hon. Noheem Adams, the Deputy Majority Leader in the ninth Assembly, was elected as the new Majority Leader while Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu was elected the Deputy Majority Leader. Hon.
