On Saturday, 12th of November, 2022, the streets of Imota were agog as students Imota community and its environs trooped out under the backing of the Imota Student’s Union to Walk Against Social Vices besetting the community.
The walk which started at the U.P.E playing ground witnessed the presence of students from different higher institutions in Nigeria, students from public and private secondary schools in Imota Local Council Development Area, and community stakeholders, amongst which is Dr Olujimi Adejo, Senior Lecturer, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Lagos State University, Ojo; Mr Lekan Ogunbowale, Director Commerce and Industry, Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Industry; Comrade Fasasi Abdulraheem, Former Speaker of Faculty of Science, Lagos State University, etc.
After a presentation from various individuals on the adverse effect of social vices, students were inspired to take to the streets to share the information.
Carrying handbills and placards containing inscriptions such as: Say No to; Cultism, Killing, Street Fighting, Drug Abuse, Cybercrime, Gambling, Thuggery, Stealing, Smoking, and Improper Waste Management, amongst other vices that are capable of harming human health and hampered societal development.
Communicating with the press, Comrade Ogunbowale Olatayo Bodunrin said, “Today, we are walking against social vices plaguing our society. We the students and the youths, we’ve gotten to a point where we can no longer be quiet”.
“Hence, the need for us to stand up and walk against all vices is making ourselves the solution to the problems of our society”.
Dr Olujimi Adejo, a senior lecturer, from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Lagos State University, Ojo lauded the Union for its efforts.
He went down history lane, digging out different intervention programs of the union from different leaders.
Appreciating the conveners of the event, He encourages the attendees to make the best use of this opportunity.
Mr Lekan Ogunbowale, Director of Commerce and Industry, Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Industry advised the students to be accountable, consistent, contented and humble in their journey in life.
Comrade Fasasi Abdulraheem, a former speaker of the Faculty of Science, Lagos State University, Ojo and staff of the Lagos State University, Department of Physics, addressed the students and told them they are training themselves on how to stand tall in the future.
While wrapping up the walk, the President, Comrade Ogunbowale Olatayo Bodunrin appreciated everyone that partook in the walk, especially the lecturers and the director that followed throughout the walk.
He advised the students to be alert, as there are many opportunities for students and youths.
