The 3rd annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Institute of Architects Ikorodu Branch (Lagos State) took place at the College of Agriculture hall, Lagos state university of science and technology (LASUSTECH) in Ikorodu on the 17th of November 2022.
Coalescing experts across the meadow of Architecture, the program theme, promoting health in buildings and cities, targeted Ikorodu, 12th largest city in Nigeria as it case study.
Playing host to scholars from both LASUSTECH and Caleb university revolving in the field, the meeting was built to attain excellence in creative management of the physical environment by mobilising informed membership for quality services.
In his opening remarks, Arc. Victor Uchenna, NIALSC Ikorodu Branch Chairman, stated that the constant migration of people into Ikorodu due to its stable geography, peaceful environment and people putting pressure on the city.
Expressing that Architects, more than ever before should partner with other Professionals to control the massive ongoing construction projects, and save the city from possible disasters of building collapses, slum growths, urban sprawls and squatter payments that can transpire when cities are expanded without the inputs of trained professionals.
Recounting that the branch 2nd AGM in 2021 was aimed at implementing her election, Arc. Victor explained that the outcome returned most of the executives and added more hands to the executive committee, enabling the outlet to fulfil its objective task of shaping the first Branch created by Lagos State Chapter of the Institute.
He continued, “The Branch achieved her goals in most of the programmes and activities set out for the year under review. These include; Founders’ day/Memorial Lecture on the posthumous birthday of one the founders of NIA, ARC Pa Michael Olutusen Onafowokan (OON), held on 1st April 2022”.
According to Arc. Victor, the program enticed the NIA President and National Excos, Chapter Chairman and Excos and several other Old members of the Institute.
“Dignitaries across Ikorodu were represented including Senator Tokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial district and Royal fathers of Ikorodu, plus members of allied professions”.
“During Arc. Enyi Ben-Ebo, President of the Institute keynote speech, he declared that the Founders Day Celebration which is the brainchild of Ikorodu Branch will now become a national project and accompany with first publication of a Compendium of Historic and Iconic Buildings in Ikorodu” Arc. Victor concluded.
Minutes of the first biennial general meeting of the Nigerian institute of architects, Ikorodu branch which was held on the 16th of December 2021 was read by Arc. Onibon-Oje Abiola (Ikorodu branch secretary), while financial reports of the institute were delivered by Arc. Ezekiel Odebiyi (Ikorodu branch treasurer) respectively.
Professor Adedeji Daramola, Professor of Architecture and Pioneer Rector, Redeemer’s College of Technology and Management, in his lecture, explained that sustainable development goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all, because they address the global challenges faced by people, including those related to poverty.

According to him, Every person, in every city, deserves to live the healthiest possible life because if the people in a city are healthy, then the city is healthy.
Professor Daramola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Caleb University, Imota, asserted that mobility should not only be a matter of developing transport infrastructure and services. It has to be placed in a systemic context including city planning as a whole, to overcome the social, economic, political, and physical constraints of movement.
“The term ‘sick building syndrome (SBS) is used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified” He added.
Other pioneer Executives of the Branch in attendance include; the Vice Chairman, Arc. Gbolahan Kukoyi, Secretary, Arc. Abiola Onibon-Oje, Treasurer, Arc. A.O Bolarinde, Financial Secretary, Arc. Olusola Amusan, P.R.O., Arc. Oladele Onafowokan and Liaison officer Arc. Tayo Oladipupo.
Prof. Oluwole Alagbe, Prof Dare Abel, Lecturers from caleb university, Arc. Opeyemi Asadi and Arc. Odeniran Gbenga was also in attendance.
NIALSC Ikorodu branch was founded on May 10, 2019, due to the desire to reach out to Architects who live and work in the localities within Lagos State not so close to the regular and constitutional place of meetings.
It was anchored by Arc. Olusegun Mayor Olabiyitan and Arc. Sumbo Ademakinwa.
