Hon. Wasiu Adesina, Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government attended the annual Lagos sanitation competition and awards ceremony on the 6th of April 2023, where his council was among the selected administration recognised for being the cleanest in Lagos Metropolis.
Organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the event is aimed at engendering a cleaner Lagos, persuading residents to join the battle of tackling environmental problems.
Held at Adeyemi Bero hall in Alausa, saw the Lagos First Lady, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu as special guest, championed by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello.
The First Lady, who was represented by Mrs Modupe Akewusola, said that the award initiative was put together to encourage community participation in cleanliness and to build synergy between various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of Government, public institutions, sector leaders, youths and private sectors towards best Hygiene Practices.
She emphasised that without a doubt, there is a clear nexus between health and the environment and that poor sanitation conditions are contributory factors to diseases and other health-related problems.
Reiterating that environmental sanitation is a collective responsibility, she added that environmental issues must be given priority in all respective LGAs/LCDAs.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello said the annual Sanitation Competition amongst LGA/LCDAs was resuscitated in the year 2021 after the cancellation of the monthly environmental sanitation 2016 through a judicial pronouncement.
He said it was introduced to spur actions from the local communities towards a sustainable environment and to raise people’s consciousness on the need to prioritise sanitation in their various communities.
Yaba LCDA, Epe LG and Sub-Urban Eredo were also winners at the ceremony.
Winners were also recognised for the cleanest Markets, Primary Healthcare Centres and MDAs.
Hon. Adesina was accompanied by his council delegates on Information and health matters, also Hon. Lateef Afinni, SLG, Alhaji Lookman Sonibare and others.
