Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos House of Assembly has pledged to continue his support to the Lagos State University (LASU).

Dr Obasa pledged on Thursday as the institution marked its 40th anniversary and 26th convocation ceremony.

According to Obasa, “the 40th anniversary of the Lagos State University (LASU), which culminated in the institution’s 26th convocation has come with a lot of testimonies, one of which is that 282 finished with first-class honours for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions.

“This record is good news and further encourages those of us in government to do more to put the institution on the enviable pedestal.

“As I joined graduands today and celebrated with prominent Nigerians who were awarded honourary Doctorates, I also got the assurances that LASU, our LASU, will attain that position we all envisage for it.

“To this end, I am happy to have performed the soil turning off the proposed edifice by HRM. Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, for the benefit of the students.

“Congratulations, Mr Babatunde Fashola, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, HRM. Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, HRM. Oba (Dr) Sulaiman Adeshina Raji, Ashade1, Dr. (MRS.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and other awardees.

img 20230930 wa00214136278179800486102 With the steps so far taken by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since May 29, 2023 when he took the oath office, Nigeria can be described as a country currently on track for economic recovery and advancement, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has said.
Dr. Obasa gave this position in a congratulatory message to Nigerians on the occasion of the country's 63rd Independence anniversary.
In the message released by his media office, the Speaker noted that Nigeria is currently led by Asiwaju Tinubu, a financial expert and who knows how to plug every hole that would ordinarily hinder the country from reaching its goals.
Noting the current challenges facing Nigeria, Dr. Obasa encouraged the citizens to be more tolerant at this time and exercise more patience with the hope of a greater destination for the country.
"We collectively understand the state of the country. We also know the sacrifice each of us is making at the moment to see that our nation works for us again.
"Delightedly, the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hit the ground running sorting out the challenges and designing action plans to resolve a whole lot of them. This is what we expect of a Nigerian leader at this time.
"Nigeria has undergone a lot of developmental experiments since 1960 when we became an independent nation. However, just as the experiments went, the country amassed various challenges which became burdensome over the years leading to the clamour for true leadership.
"In the last few months, right steps have been taken by the government, which, if we all work around, would gravitate into producing the right results we all yearn to see and experience.
"We all want to see a country that attracts investors because of the right environment, we aspire to have world-class health services, we clamour for better education for our children, better prospects and employment opportunities. These are all achievable. What we simply need is cooperation with the government of the day.
"Nigeria is on the pathway to greatness. We have to pull together our collective resilience, patriotism and strength to see us through so our country can return to its enviable state in the comity of nations.
"I congratulate every Nigerian citizen today and urge us all to see a blissful future ahead of us," the Speaker urged.
"At the Lagos State House of Assembly, we have taken various actions, many of them futuristic, which have helped to create a sane environment devoid of the level of criminalities experienced elsewhere.
"We will never sit on these achievements, but work tirelessly to see that each resident of our dear State truly believes in Lagos and its success," the Speaker added.

img 20230922 wa00194052512174661337085 The chairman of the Lagos Assembly ad-hoc committee with the mandate to investigate the circumstances that led to the disappearance of Adebola Akin-Bright's small intestine, Hon. Noheem Adams, has told his colleagues that the doctor who performed surgery twice on the boy is not a qualified surgeon.
This is as the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, during plenary on Thursday, directed the Clerk, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to write to the State police command for the arrest of Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu of Obitoks Hospital in the Alimosho area of Lagos. Adebola died on Tuesday shortly after the House called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to further assist him seek treatment abroad.
While thanking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his effort at the period the boy was being treated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Speaker Obasa directed that a letter conveying the condolence message of the House be sent to the family.
Dr. Obasa further asked the committee to look into other grey areas including inviting officials of the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) which has the law-backed responsibility to monitor private hospitals operating in the State.
The Speaker further asked the committee to review the extant law so as to know if it should be amended just as he said private hospitals can be made to always report their activities to the government at all times.
Formally announcing Adebola's death, Hon. Adams said the boy's case was disheartening. He said when the committee visited him on Tuesday, he still spoke with the lawmakers.
He, however, said during investigation, the committee learnt from Dr. Baiyewu that he is not a surgeon but only relied on his experience as a medical doctor.
He also said Baiyewu, whose testimonies were recorded, told the committee that he did not carry out any medical examination on the boy before the first surgery which he did himself adding that he only relied on the report from a hospital the patient was first
taken to.
Noheem said after Baiyewu did the first surgery, the boy continued to complain about stomach pain and was taken back to Obitoks Hospital where Baiyewu carried out another round of surgery by himself.
Following more complications, Hon. Noheem said the boy was taken to LASUTH where it was confirmed that part of his intestine was missing.
The lawmaker said as a doctor, Baiyewu should have taken the excised part of the boy's body to a pathological department for test, but that "Dr. Baiyewu told the committee that the body parts were mistakenly discarded," and that the doctor had planned to do a third surgery before the boy was taken to LASUTH.
After Noheem's submission, the House commiserated with the bereaved family with Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda calling for the sealing of the hospital.
Another member of the committee, Hon. Lawal Aina, told his colleagues it was a pitiable sight when the committee visited Adebola at the hospital.
He added that upon interrogation, it was discovered that Dr. Baiyewu proved not to have been a certified surgeon.
Some of the lawmakers who spoke on the issue, suggested that a formal complaint be made against Dr. Baiyewu to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for action while others urged stricter monitoring of medical doctors and hospitals.

mohbad 15 4 236945333476953100780 The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Ministry of Health to release funds for the overseas treatment of Adebola Akin-Bright, whose intestines got missing in the process of surgery.
The House also commisserated with the family, friends and fans of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, better known as Mohbad, a young Nigerian Aftobeat musician, whose mysterious death has caused reactions across Nigeria and other countries.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, while presiding over the day's plenary, moved that Master Akin-Bright needed the urgent treatment abroad.
Dr. Obasa and the House also called for the immediate arrest of the doctor of the private hospital, Obitoks Medical Centre in the Alimosho area of the state, who performed the initial surgery that led to the missing small intestine while investigations continue.
The Speaker's position followed a preliminary report by the Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, who briefed the House on the findings of a five-man ad-hoc committee created to investigate the circumstances that led to the disappearance of the boy's intestine.
Giving the preliminary report, Hon. Adams said members of the ad-hoc committee visited the boy at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Tuesday.
Adams, who chairs the committee, said that the full report would soon be presented, adding that some shocking discoveries were made in the course of its investigations.
"We made some shocking discoveries in the course of our investigation. The incident is very unusual, but we want the boy to survive and we know Mr. Speaker is very interested in his survival too.
"We went to LASUTH on the directives of the Speaker, Rt. Hon Mudashiru Obasa, to find out the health status of Adebola Akin-Bright. "The hospital told us that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had taken care of the bill for his treatment at LASUTH.
Adams, however, said they were told by the hospital that Akin-Bright needed to be transferred urgently to either the United States of America or United Kingdom for an intestine transplant and that communications were ongoing with hospitals in the two countries.
In his contribution, Hon. Temitope Adewale, another member of the committee, said the patient's health was deteriorating and that urgent steps needed to be taken.
"He is now given GMO nutrient and there is the urgent need to take him abroad.
"Mr. Speaker, you have given this boy the opportunity to survive by setting up the committee," he said.
Meanwhile, the House has thrown its weight behind the investigation by the police into Mohbad's death.
The Speaker, while commending the Governor for also inviting the Department of State Services (DSS) into the issue, directed the Clerk of the House, Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, to write the Lagos Police Command and the DSS intimating them that the House supports the investigation and expect justice for the bereaved family.
Obasa also urged fans of Mohbad to be patient and continue to act with decorum while the investigation continues.
