The CEO of Nigerians In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has emphasized the importance of acquiring proper documentation for Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.
During her recent visit to a shelter in Brampton, Ontario, where stranded Nigerians reside, she urged compatriots to travel responsibly and uphold a positive image of Nigeria overseas.
Dabiri-Erewa’s visit included an interactive session with the Nigerian community in the city, during which she cautioned against unscrupulous practices leading to potential challenges for those seeking greener pastures.
Prince Kayode Olaide, a Nigerian-born Canadian resident, highlighted instances where individuals would claim asylum under the pretext of life-threatening situations in Nigeria.
“These individuals often arrive without financial means, seeking refuge in shelters and food banks,” explained Olaide. “Some enter as visitors, while others misuse study visas to pursue asylum claims. The strain on shelters has become pronounced, prompting the Canadian government to accommodate asylum seekers in hotels, incurring substantial costs for accommodation, feeding, and legal support.”
He further detailed the process, indicating that asylum seekers submit their stories to the Canadian government, which then processes work permits while awaiting a hearing before a panel.
Legal aid is provided to support individuals through the legal proceedings.
The increasing number of asylum seekers crossing from the US to Canada has posed challenges for local governments, leading to a heightened need for resources to manage the influx.
As NIDCOM continues its efforts to engage with the Nigerian diaspora, Dabiri-Erewa’s call serves as a reminder for individuals to adhere to proper procedures when seeking opportunities abroad.
