Early this week, a viral video surfaced on social media capturing the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya expressing her frustration over alleged malpractices by some market vendors, swindling unsuspecting customers.

The Commissioner expressed her dismay over vendors taking advantage of consumers by inflating prices at the Mushin Food Hub, set up by the Lagos State Government to assess the demand and supply of food commodities in the State, aims to facilitate profitable partnerships between traders, farmers, and the Lagos State Government.

Olusanya, during an interview on TVC’s morning show ‘The View,’ revealed that the Mushin Food Hub serves as a template for a broader welfare initiative to be implemented statewide.

Operating on Saturdays to avoid conflicting with regular market activities, the hub initially offered a 10% discount to consumers.

However, following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive for a 25% discount on food prices due to economic challenges, the Commissioner ensured the immediate implementation of the adjustment at the hub.

Expressing disappointment at the vendors’ response to increased consumer turnout, Ms Olusanya convened an emergency stakeholders meeting to address the issue.

During the meeting, she emphasized the government’s commitment to providing a free platform for vendors, encouraging cooperation for the overall betterment of all stakeholders.

Acknowledging the inherent challenges in experimenting with such initiatives, the Commissioner clarified that the intention was not to punish vendors caught in price manipulation.

Instead, she sought to sound a stern warning and ensure adherence to set regulations.

To avoid such dubious acts by vendors, the commissioner further explained that the government plans to rotate vendors and collaborate with those willing to comply with the established guidelines, promoting fairness and transparency in the food supply chain.
