In a milestone for urban transportation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the inauguration of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line, the state’s second intra-city metro system, designed to accommodate 250,000 passengers daily.

The event, featuring a historic train ride, underlined the commitment to infrastructure development by the Sanwo-Olu administration.

Spanning 37 kilometers and constructed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Red Line links Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos Central, boasting seven strategically located stations.

Launched precisely a year after the Blue Line’s introduction, the Red Line reinforces Lagos’s dedication to a comprehensive and connected transport network.

The ceremony, attended by six Governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, business leaders, and other dignitaries, witnessed President Tinubu applauding Governor Sanwo-Olu for the visionary achievement.

Tinubu emphasized the Red Line’s pivotal role in advancing the state’s infrastructure and bolstering the democratic vision.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the event as the culmination of extensive reforms in the transportation sector, highlighting the unprecedented integration of road, rail, and waterways in Lagos.

The completion of the Red Line’s first phase aims to transport 250,000 passengers daily, with a planned expansion to accommodate 750,000 with full rolling stock implementation.

Before the inauguration, Sanwo-Olu commissioned T-shaped bridges along the rail corridor to minimize vehicular interference.

The occasion also marked the signing of a contract for Phase Two of the Red Line, extending the project to Marina and National Theatre stations of the Blue Line, further advancing Lagos’s vision for a comprehensive and interconnected transportation network.
