In response to the alarming surge in kidnapping incidents nationwide, the Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to bolster the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) by increasing personnel.

The assembly expressed sympathy for affected states and families of victims, particularly in light of recent high-profile cases, including the abduction of 280 children in Kaduna, 102 in Borno, and 15 in Sokoto.

During a discussion labeled ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance,’ Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa emphasized the need for collective action against kidnapping, citing the ongoing plight of the Chibok girls.

He acknowledged the importance of protecting the future of children, criticizing the actions of kidnappers as a threat to education.

Dr. Obasa commended First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for advocating capital punishment as a deterrent, praising her boldness in addressing the issue. He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for state police and urged a review of existing laws on kidnapping by the National Assembly.

The Speaker applauded the military’s efforts but suggested potential relocations to areas facing frequent attacks. Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu called on governors and speakers of states to take legislative action.

Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh proposed establishing special courts for swift trials, while Hon. Abiodun Orekoya suggested leveraging technology in military surveillance.

In a broader context, the assembly urged Nigerians to show solidarity during Ramadan, with Speaker Obasa encouraging Muslims to share with those in need and pray for peace.

He also appealed for unity among Nigerians, transcending religious differences, emphasizing the importance of love and compassion.
