Renowned statesman and environmental expert, Engr. Amid Adekunle Oduborisa, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider involving Nigeria in the activities of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) as well as other member nations, citing it as a strategic move towards addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

In an exclusive interview with the International News Network (INN) on the 12th of March 2024, Oduborisa emphasized the potential benefits of Nigeria’s participation in the intergovernmental organization.

BRICS, initially established to highlight investment opportunities among member nations, has evolved into a cohesive geopolitical bloc since its inception in 2009.

Comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with observer countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, BRICS facilitates annual formal summits where member governments coordinate multilateral policies.

Oduborisa stressed that Nigeria’s involvement in BRICS could have profound implications, particularly in terms of market control and exchange rate stability.

Outlining additional ways Nigeria could benefit from engaging with BRICS nations, Oduborisa said that it would be an opportunity for Nigeria to leverage its abundant mineral resources through joint initiatives with BRICS members.

Underscoring the importance of Nigeria’s sizable population as a driving force for economic growth, Oduborisa urged for strategic partnerships to capitalize on the nation’s demographic advantage.

He highlighted the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s economic potential within the framework of BRICS, emphasizing that active participation would enable Nigeria to assert greater influence in global economic affairs.

“Nigeria will be able to control our market in terms of exchange rate if we get involved,” Oduborisa stated during the interview.

He emphasized that BRICS membership would afford Nigeria the opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations with member nations based on principles of non-interference, equality, and mutual benefit.

Furthermore, Oduborisa underscored that Nigeria’s engagement with BRICS could serve as a viable strategy for mitigating the country’s present economic hardships.

By aligning with emerging global economic powers and participating in initiatives aimed at promoting cooperation and development, Nigeria could potentially unlock new avenues for economic growth and resilience.

The call for Nigeria’s involvement in BRICS reflects a growing recognition of the organisation’s significance as a key player in shaping the global economic landscape.

“President Tinubu is presently working towards enhancing our government policies to help Nigerians, but I believe that further developments regarding Nigeria’s potential integration into BRICS will be a welcome growth”.

“Nigeria’s eventual participation in BRICS would underscore the imperative for strategic engagement with international partners to address pressing economic challenges and unlock opportunities for sustainable development” Oduborisa concluded.
