Gearing towards environmental sustainability and wealth creation, the Ikorodu Local Government has partnered with Ibile Oil and Gas, Wecyclers, and Sahara Group to launch the local government’s first recycling hub.
The Go Recycling Hub Project, officially launched by Council Chairman Hon. Wasiu Adesina, on June 28, 2024, at Ojogbe Bus Stop, aims to transform lives and communities by turning waste into wealth.
Through the initiative, the community is poised to turn waste into wealth, fostering a healthier and more prosperous environment for all.
Leading up to the launch, partnering agencies and council officials conducted an extensive awareness campaign throughout Ikorodu Central.
They engaged residents in the nooks and crannies of the area, educating them on the benefits of recycling waste products.
Following the awareness campaign, initiators, council officials, stakeholders, party leaders, youth representatives, and market heads gathered at Ojogbe Bus Stop.
The council chairman provided free space for the recycling hub installation, marking a significant step in promoting environmental health and sustainability in the community.
In his speech, Hon. Wasiu Adesina emphasized the transformative potential of the project.
“We generate tons of waste daily, from household trash to industrial byproducts, which we could convert into valuable resources,” he said.
Adesina outlined the importance of efficient waste management, detailing the processes involved in sorting, packaging, transporting, disposing, and recycling waste materials.
“We often overlook the potential in waste, but I stand before you to say waste can be a catalyst for change,” Adesina continued.
He detailed the broader goals of the initiative, which include empowering communities, developing innovative solutions, creating jobs, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and reducing inequality and poverty.
David Ayinde, representing Sahara Group, praised the waste-to-wealth program for its role in addressing environmental concerns and economic needs across the country.
He urged residents to build a community that transforms waste into wealth, creating a brighter future for all.
Folashade Adebanjo from Sahara Group commended Adesina for providing land for the recycling hub. “Having a chairman like Adesina means Ikorodu is blessed,” she stated.
Esther Chibueyin Fagbo from Wecyclers explained the types of waste eligible for recycling in exchange for money, including pure water sachets, plastic bowls, lids, cartons, papers, baskets, tomato tins, chairs, buckets, kegs, bottles, and aluminum cans.
She emphasized that the waste would be weighed before being converted to cash.
Abiola Ibine from Ibile Oil & Gas Corporation highlighted the initiative’s 12-year history and its readiness to make a significant impact in Ikorodu.
She praised Adesina’s commitment to the project.
Former council chairman Junaid Owokodu lauded Adesina for adopting the health and productivity initiative, calling it a step forward in advancing Ikorodu towards a cleaner environment.
He noted that Ikorodu is setting a positive example for other local governments.
APC Lagos East woman leader, Mrs. Wonuola Oshinowo described the program as a blessing in disguise, recognizing its potential to generate income from waste products.
Alhaji S.A. Longe and Alhaja Adebuloka Osho, the Iya-Oloja of Ikorodu Central, echoed these sentiments, urging market men and women to embrace the initiative.
Osho pointed out that marketplaces easily accumulate waste, which can now be turned into money.
The launch of the Go Recycling Hub Project marks a significant milestone in Ikorodu’s journey towards environmental sustainability and economic empowerment.
Vice-chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Aarebirin Honourable Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, Secretary to the Local Government, Alahji Lateef Afini, Council Super for Bugdet, Alhaji Lateef Oyefusi, APC Ikorodu woman leader, Alhaja Rashidat Bello among other dignitaries were present at the event.
