HON. WASIU ADESINA LEADS 2024 TREE PLANTING DAY: “NURTURING OUR FUTURE” ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government Area, Hon. Wasiu Adesina spearheaded the annual tree planting program at Jamaitul Islamiyyah Primary School in Ikorodu on the 14th of July 2024.

The theme, “Nurturing Our Future,” reflects the importance of not only planting trees but also nurturing them to ensure long-term environmental benefits.

The annual program aimed to celebrate nature and educate the community on the crucial role plants play in our ecosystem.

This year, it attracted several distinguished attendees, including Alhaji Shamseedeen Longe, Alhaji Bello Rasheedat (Women Leader Ikorodu LGA), Hon. Adebowale Ajayi (Leader of the House Ikorodu LGA), Alhaji Showemimo Kazeem (Supervisor for Environment), Mr. Hassan Oriyomi (Representative of the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources), Alhaji Lamidi Folorunsho, Alhaji L. A. Sulaimon, Alhaji Yusuf Olarewaju, Alhaja Osho Bukola (Iya Oja Ikorodu Central), Alhaji Shonibare Lukman, Mr. Aganna Matthew (HOD Environment Ikorodu LGA), Mrs. Mutiat Ojulari (Iya Oja Sabo Market), and Headmistress Ogunsusi Comfort.

Speaking to guests before the tree planting, Hon. Wasiu Adesina expressed  gratitude towards everyone’s participation.

“It is a great privilege to have you in our midst today. We welcome you all,” he stated.

He emphasized that tree planting goes beyond beautification; it is about actively contributing to the preservation and enhancement of our natural environment.

Detailing the multifaceted benefits of trees, Hon. Adeshina noted that they provide essential oxygen, offer shade, and serve as shelter and sustenance for numerous species, including humans.

“We must know that it is our collective responsibility to continually plant trees and work towards a sustainable future,” he said. “Let us nurture these trees with care and watch them grow into mighty trees that will stand for years to come,” he added.

Mr. Oriyomi, representing the Commissioner for Environmental and Water Resources, expressed appreciation towards the chairman and highlighted the benefits of tree planting, emphasizing its critical role in enhancing both health and the aesthetic appeal of the environment.

“Tree planting is not just about greening our spaces,” Mr. Oriyomi stated, “it significantly contributes to improving air quality, reducing stress, and providing shade, which can lower temperatures in urban areas.”

Mr. Oriyomi urged the school involved in the program to take diligent care of the newly planted trees on their premises. He explained the importance of maintaining these trees to ensure they thrive and continue to provide the numerous benefits they offer.

“It’s essential that we not only plant trees but also commit to nurturing them. These trees will stand as a reflection to our commitment to a healthier and more beautiful environment,” he said.

Mr. Abimbola Olabode, Desk Officer for Lagos State Parks and Gardens (LASPAK), stated the significance of the 2024 theme, “Nurturing Our Future.”

Speaking to students, staff, and community members, Mr. Olabode emphasized the critical role trees play not only in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of our environment but also in providing substantial health benefits.

“The theme ‘Nurturing Our Future’ is a call to action for all of us to prioritize the care and preservation of our natural resources,” Mr. Olabode stated.

He said that trees are essential for improving air quality, reducing pollution, and offering shade, which collectively contributes to better health and well-being.

Mr. Olabode urged the school to maintain the newly planted trees, emphasizing that their growth and sustainability would benefit both the students and the wider community.

“By nurturing these trees, we are investing in a healthier and more beautiful environment for future generations,” he added.

Mrs. Ogunsusi Comfort, Headmistress of Jamaitul Islamiyyah Primary School, expressed her gratitude to Hon. Wasiu Adesina and Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA) for their ongoing support.

“We will ensure that the students understand the usefulness and importance of tree planting in the community according to this year’s theme,” Mrs. Ogunsusi remarked.

Mrs. Ogunsusi also took the opportunity to urge the council chairman to address the academic needs of the pupils. “Ensuring a healthy and conducive learning environment is paramount for the academic success of our students,” she stated.

In response, Adesina assured the headmistress that all necessary improvements would be undertaken to enhance the educational experience for pupils.

He added that the local government’s dedication to providing a conducive learning environment is second to none.

“We are committed to ensuring that our children have the best facilities and resources available to foster their academic growth and personal development,” Adesina stated.

“The future of our community lies in the hands of these young minds, and we must nurture and support them.”

Mr. Aganna Matthew, the Head of the Sanitation Department in his vote of thanks, expressed gratitude to everyone present.

Matthew said, “It is one thing to invite; it is another thing for the invitation to be honoured. We appreciate you all for honouring us today.”

The program concluded with the planting of several trees on the school grounds, symbolizing the council’s commitment to nurturing the environment for future generations.
