As the world celebrated International Youth Day on the 15th of July 2024, the youths of Ikorodu Central were actively engaged in a transformative initiative by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Ikorodu Central branch.
The organization hosted a one-day skill acquisition training program at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat hall.
The program was designed to enhance the skillsets of local youths, equipping them with practical skills to foster productivity and self-sufficiency within their community.
Backed by Ikorodu Local Government, the practical program featured a series of training sessions in Gele tying, soap making, and product branding, each led by seasoned experts in the respective fields.
The primary goal of the program was to provide youths with diverse skills, enabling them to become valuable contributors to the local economy and to their personal development.
Aarebirin Hon. Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, the Vice-chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, graced the event and offered words of encouragement to the participants.
She urged them to seize the opportunity presented by the training to significantly impact their careers and personal lives.
Alhaji Lateef Afinni, the secretary to the local government, also attended the event.
He praised the organizers for utilizing the occasion of World Youth Day to engage and uplift the youths with the support of the council.
Prominent youth leaders were in attendance, including Comrade Olalekan Biliamin-Oba, the immediate past chairman of NYCN Lagos State, and Comrade Asoro Abubakri Olatunji, the newly appointed Vice-chairman of NYCN Lagos East.
Both leaders took turns to inspire and motivate the participants, sharing words of wisdom and encouraging them to aspire to greater heights in their careers.
The training sessions, which were predominantly hands-on, began in the early hours and continued until the afternoon.
The schedule included intervals for refreshments to keep the participants energized.
Speaking to the Ikorodu News Network (INN), Comrade Basit Ogunsanmi, the coordinator of the NYCN Ikorodu Central branch, expressed that the training was his inaugural project since taking office.
He emphasized that the program aimed to make a significant impact on the lives of youths in Ikorodu Central.
Comrade Basit assured that more impactful programs were on the horizon, urging the youths to stay prepared for upcoming life-changing initiatives.
Comrade Asoro Abubakri Olatunji detailed the importance of such programs in preparing youths for life’s challenges and fostering successful career paths.
“The training they received today in Gele tying, soap making, and branding will undoubtedly help participants forge new, positive paths going forward,” Asoro asserted.
Former State chairman of NYCN Lagos, Comrade Olalekan Biliamin-Oba, congratulated Comrade Basit Ogunsanmi’s leadership for organizing the program.
He explained that training is a critical medium for creating positive trajectories for youths.
However, he also advised against the recycling of participants in multiple training programs, emphasizing the need for focused and sustained learning in specific skill areas.
“Some youths attend multiple training sessions, which can dilute their focus. It is important for youths to concentrate on mastering specific skills rather than partaking in numerous training programs,” Biliamin-Oba cautioned.
Comrade Usman Toba-Dosumu, President of the Ikorodu Students Association, commended the NYCN Ikorodu Central branch’s commitment to youth empowerment.
He noted that the training program marked a significant step towards a brighter future for the youths of Ikorodu Central.
Coordinator Basit Ogunsanmi extended his gratitude to the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government Area, Hon. Wasiu Adesina, for his unwavering support of the training program.
He noted that the chairman’s interest led to the inclusion of digital training in the program, which initially focused solely on Gele tying and soap making.
Ogunsanmi praised the council chairman for his role in making the event a success and hinted at future initiatives aimed at further uplifting the youths in the region.
The event concluded on a high note, with participants expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to acquire new skills.
