“WHY THE PLANNED ‘ENDBADGOVERNANCEINNIGERIA PROTEST RISKS FURTHER HARM IN AN ALREADY FRAGILE ECONOMY” ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Opinion by Ikorodu News Network (INN)

The planned national protest, tagged ‘#EndBadGovernanceinNigeria,’ scheduled from August 1 to 10, aims to draw President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s attention to the pressing issues of hunger and the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

While the intent behind the protest is undoubtedly rooted in genuine concern for the welfare of Nigerians, the timing and potential outcomes warrant a closer examination.

At this juncture, the protest may inadvertently exacerbate the country’s challenges rather than offer a constructive path forward.

Nigeria’s economy is in a delicate state, grappling with the aftershocks of recent economic policies and global financial pressures.

The nation is in the midst of a strenuous recovery phase, striving to stabilize and rejuvenate its economic landscape. During such vulnerable periods, the introduction of large-scale protests can be counterproductive.

Historically, protests in Nigeria have often been hijacked by individuals or groups with ulterior motives, leading to violence, property damage, and disruption of daily life.

This not only undermines the protest’s objectives but also inflicts further hardship on ordinary citizens and businesses already struggling to cope with the economic downturn.

Moreover, while it is undeniable that the cost of living remains high and many Nigerians are facing significant financial strain, it is crucial to acknowledge that the current phase of adjustment is a necessary part of economic reform.

Citizens are making efforts to adapt to the new economic realities, and the resilience they demonstrate during this period is commendable.

The administration’s focus should be on implementing long-term solutions that address these challenges comprehensively rather than being diverted by the immediate disruptions caused by protests.

Patience and perseverance are vital as the country navigates through these turbulent times. The latter part of 2024 may present opportunities for economic improvement and stabilization if the focus remains on constructive dialogue and collaborative problem-solving rather than confrontation.

A peaceful and supportive approach will contribute more effectively to Nigeria’s recovery than a protest that could potentially deepen existing divides and hinder progress.

In summary, while the frustration behind the ‘#EndBadGovernanceinNigeria’ protest is understandable, the current economic climate calls for a more nuanced approach. Engaging in protests at this time may risk further destabilizing an already fragile economy and impeding the collective effort needed for recovery.

Let Nigeria embrace patience and work towards a peaceful resolution, as a unified and optimistic outlook promises a brighter future for all.
