ENDBADGOVERNANCEINNIGERIA! “THE PERILS OF PROTESTING: WHY DIALOGUE, NOT DEMONSTRATION, IS THE KEY TO PROGRESS” ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Opinion by Ikorodu News Network

As Nigeria faces yet another wave of proposed protests under the #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria banner, it is crucial to examine whether these actions are truly beneficial or potentially harmful to the nation’s future.

Although the initiative’s name suggests a promising solution to governance issues, it may lead to more harm than good.

The proposed protests, despite their noble intentions, resemble a well-presented meal that ultimately fails to satisfy.

The current atmosphere of the nation is one of cautious optimism, with many hoping for positive changes in their lives.

For those eager to seize the spotlight as social media icons or protest leaders (like Aisha Yesufu), it’s worth reflecting on a recent exchange with a young protester I encountered.

On Saturday, July 27, 2024, I found myself in a public setting, surrounded by Nigerians engaged in a heated discussion about the upcoming protests.

Among the participants, one young man stood out due to his intense enthusiasm for the demonstrations.

He openly expressed his full intention to participate and launched strong criticisms against the Nigerian government.

While his fervor was evident, I was more interested in understanding his commitment.

At one point, I asked him if he would be willing to accept responsibility for any potential chaos by signing a hypothetical riot act (a non-traditional approach, but one I used to test his resolve).

His hesitation revealed a broader issue: many are eager to challenge the status quo but are reluctant to bear the consequences of their actions.

This encounter clearly showed the disparity between vocal support for change and the willingness to accept personal responsibility.

Let’s also remember the flipside of the #Endsars protests as a cautionary tale.

The violence and chaos that ensued led to some vulnerable areas and communities being placed under military watch because day-to-day law enforcers were afraid for their lives.

There were attacks on police stations and a surge in criminal activity.

Innocent citizens suffered greatly during this period, with many families recounting how the ensuing chaos exacerbated their hardships and negatively impacted their lives.

The aftermath of the #Endsars protests serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of widespread unrest and the importance of considering these impacts when planning future demonstrations.

While the right to peaceful protest is legally protected, it is not without limits.

The government’s recent willingness to engage in dialogue presents a more constructive avenue for addressing grievances.

Embracing this opportunity for discussion, rather than resorting to protests, could help avoid the negative outcomes observed in past demonstrations.

In conclusion, this opinion is a call to prioritize dialogue over protests.

The adage “prevention is better than cure” reflects the importance of seeking solutions that do not exacerbate existing problems.
