GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU CALLS FOR PATIENCE AND UNITY AMID PROTESTS, HIGHLIGHTS STATE PROGRESS AND ECONOMIC REFORMS ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu addressed Lagosians today with a strong message of commitment to the state’s well-being and prosperity.

In his address, he reflected on Lagos’s role as a symbol of hope and resilience, fueled by the diverse energy and brilliance of its people.

Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the recent anticipation of protests aimed at what some have criticized as “bad government.”

While he recognized the noble intentions behind these protests, he voiced concerns over the narratives, suggesting that such demonstrations might be used to effect non-constitutional changes in government.

He questioned whether protests could be the catalyst for the progress needed at this time, asking if they would resolve challenges in the short term or lead to immediate economic benefits.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed scepticism, believing that protests could potentially undo the modest gains achieved so far.

Addressing the ongoing challenges, the governor assured residents that the government is actively working to address them.

Significant efforts are underway across various sectors to alleviate public hardships and lay the groundwork for lasting prosperity.

Notably, President Tinubu recently signed a new minimum wage law, student loans are being disbursed to alleviate financial burdens, and local governments have gained financial autonomy to improve governance.

The governor highlighted the government’s innovative approach to tackling the foreign exchange crisis, including the sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira, which is expected to save $7.9 billion annually and strengthen the currency.

Additionally, the Presidential Initiative on CNG is attracting private investments.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for patience as the benefits of these economic reforms take time to materialize.

He stressed that protests can not achieve the results that these strategic reforms are expected to deliver over the coming months. Under President Tinubu’s leadership, he affirmed that the nation is on the right path.

In Lagos, the governor introduced the EKOCARES initiative to mitigate the impact of economic reforms on residents.

This program includes discount markets, reduced transport costs, and free medical care.

Additionally, there have been increases in bursaries and scholarships for students, free education for new elementary students, and wages for workers exceeding the national minimum wage.

Reflecting on the tragic events of the EndSARS protests in 2020, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted the peaceful start of the protests, which were later hijacked, leading to significant destruction and loss.

He highlighted the extensive damage inflicted on properties and institutions, including the Lagos High Court, police stations, local government offices, fire stations, and the Forensic Centre.

The destruction also extended to malls, shops, offices, and brand-new BRT buses.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of avoiding economic destabilization that could worsen the state’s conditions.

He called for unity, dialogue, and a collective effort to build a peaceful and prosperous Lagos.

To facilitate safe and peaceful protests, the Police have designated Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park as secured locations.

In closing, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged Lagosians to work together to ensure a safe, secure, and prosperous future for all, emphasizing that the strength of the city lies in its unity and the maintenance of peace and stability.
