A heavy-duty truck, believed to be loaded with bags of cement, was involved in a near-tragic accident on Sunday, September 8th, 2024, when its brakes failed at the busy Ketu Bus Stop in Lagos State.
The truck, out of control, veered off its course and crashed into a high-tension pole, narrowly avoiding what could have been a devastating disaster.
The driver, whose identity remains unknown, was quick to make a split-second decision, diverting the truck away from the crowded bus stop to avoid plowing into commuters and road users along Ikorodu Road.
In his attempt to prevent a larger catastrophe, the truck collided with the high-tension pole, also destroying a standing terminal point for buses and LASTMA operatives.
Eyewitnesses praised the driver’s quick thinking, noting that if he had continued straight, the truck would have likely crushed bystanders waiting for buses along the busy road.
“He saved a lot of lives today,” one witness remarked. “If the truck hadn’t been diverted, the casualties would have been enormous.”
The crash caused a brief traffic disruption along the Ketu-Ikorodu axis, as emergency services and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials responded to the scene.
While no casualties were reported, the truck remains at the crash site, with plans for evacuation still underway.
LASTMA officials are working on clearing the site to restore normal traffic flow, as commuters continue to navigate around the incident.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the brake failure and to ensure the safe removal of the damaged vehicle.
