In a continued effort to improve infrastructure across rural areas, the Lagos State Government, through the Office of Rural Development, has initiated another phase of its rural electrification project.
This phase focuses on the installation of solar-powered streetlights in various communities, ensuring better visibility and security for residents.
While other areas in Ajah, Lagos, had already benefited, the Ito Progressive Community in Isiu received 15 solar-powered streetlights on October 22, 2024.
The project, part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance rural electrification, aims to provide reliable and sustainable lighting in areas with limited access to electricity.
The Chairman of Ito Progressive Community Development Association (CDA), Mr. Taiwo Dosunmu, along with other community leaders, welcomed the government’s support and expressed gratitude for the development.
Mr. Donald Deedee Oke, a former secretary of the CDA and a key member of the community, praised the project, noting that it would significantly improve night-time visibility and enhance safety in the area.
“For a long time, our community has been in darkness,” said Mr. Omoteji Abayomi Zachaeus, the General Secretary of Ito Progressive CDA.
“After 7 p.m., it’s difficult for people to visit because the darkness makes it seem as though no one lives here. Even bike riders are afraid to come this way.”
Alhaji Bika Monsuru, the project committee chairman, also commended the initiative, describing it as a much-needed intervention for rural communities.
He lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his dedication to improving the quality of life in these areas.
Speaking on behalf of the state government, Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Rural Development, reiterated that the solar-powered streetlight project is part of the government’s broader rural electrification plan, which has already seen the distribution of transformers in rural areas during the second, third, and fourth quarters of the year.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is committed to bridging the gap between urban and rural communities,” Dr. Agbaje stated.
“The rural electrification projects, including these solar-powered lights, are driven by his vision to bring development to every part of Lagos State.”
He further assured that more rural communities across the state would benefit from the solar-powered streetlight initiative, signalling the government’s continued dedication to improving infrastructure and services in underserved areas.
“This project is expected to greatly improve the quality of life for residents, offering not only better visibility at night but also enhancing security and economic activity in these communities,” Dr Agbaje added.
