THE HISTORY OF IKORODU CLUB: A LEGACY OF  UNITY, GROWTH, & COMMUNITY IMPACT ~ INN Nigeria ☆

In October 1974, a transformative initiative took root in Ikorodu as a group of visionary indigenes, largely professionals and Oriwu College alumni, united to establish a social club.

Their mission was to create a platform for peace, love, and unity, as embodied in the club’s motto.

The foundation was laid through informal meetings, culminating in an inaugural gathering on November 24, 1974, at Alhaji (Prince) Mukaila A. Shokunbi’s residence on Awe Street, Lagos.

This space served as the club’s secretariat before meetings began rotating among members in the late 1970s.

Naming and Early Leadership
On February 23, 1975, during a monthly meeting, the name Ikorodu Club was proposed by Dr. Jide Awolesi and unanimously adopted. The first slate of officers was also elected:

President: Engr. Tahir Ayinde Sanni; Vice President: Barrister Henry Rashid A. Rabiu; General Secretary: Mr. Boonyamin Onimole; Financial Secretary: Prince Mukaila Adeyemo Shokunbi.

Treasurer: Mr. Mukaila Olayinka Akinsanya; Social Secretary: Mr. Wukaisat Adesina Jaiyesimi; Auditor: Dr. Babajide Awolesi; Assistant General Secretary: Mr. Kamar-deen Adisa Olokunola.

The first draft of the constitution, crafted by the inaugural General Secretary Alhaji Boonyamin Onimole, was approved on May 25, 1975, establishing the club’s operational framework.

Symbol and Legal Identity
In January 1976, Mr. Onimole was assigned to design the club’s crest, which was finalized and delivered in January 1977.

The crest remains a key emblem of the club. Ikorodu Club solidified its legal status by registering with the Corporate Affairs Commission on January 23, 1992 (registration number 6580).

Patronage and Membership Growth
The club’s prestige grew with the appointment of Alhaji Adamo Bamisedun as Patron in May 1976 and HRH Oba S.A. Oyefusi Oguntade II as Grand Patron in October 1976.

Membership flourished, welcoming prominent individuals like Barrister Yomi Alokolaro and Alhaji Ashafa Abisogun Alison by 1980.

The club also gained visibility through notable events such as the March 27, 1977 gala night at Lagos City Hall, where King Sunny Ade’s performance captivated attendees.

Acquisition of Permanent Grounds
In 1981, under Barrister Alokolaro’s leadership, the club secured its current location, a 4,429.573-square-meter site from the Olukotun family.

This milestone marked a transition from informal gatherings to a structured organization.

Building the Clubhouse
Alhaji L.A. Gbadamosi’s 1978 proposal for a permanent clubhouse spurred significant fundraising efforts. Initiatives like the 1979 and 1981 events at Mainland Hotel raised funds for the land purchase and clubhouse development.

The foundation stone was laid on March 15, 1987, under the presidency of the late T.A.O. Giwa.

Subsequent leaders, including Dr. (Engr.) Femi Anibaba and Engr. Wasiu Olokunola advanced the clubhouse’s construction.

In 2002, the tarred Ikorodu Club Avenue was commissioned by Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Overcoming Challenges
The club demonstrated resilience during economic challenges, such as the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) era.

Members like Barrister Alokolaro and Engr. Sanni contributed generously to sustain the club’s growth and complete key projects.

Legacy and Continued Impact
From its humble beginnings in 1974 to its present status, Ikorodu Club has remained a cornerstone of Ikorodu’s social fabric.

It stands as a vibrant hub for unity, professional networking, and community development, driven by the vision and determination of its founding members and successive leaders.

As Ikorodu Club marks the 50th anniversary of its illustrious history, it continues to embody the ideals of peace, love, and unity while fostering enduring bonds within the Ikorodu community and beyond.
