The immediate past president of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Dr. Dorothy Bassey, engaged with INN-House Creative Director Eromona Michael in an insightful virtual interview on November 26, 2024, to discuss transformative strategies for advancing Nigeria’s environmental sector.

Despite being based in the United Kingdom, Dr. Bassey connected seamlessly with Mr. Eromona in Nigeria for a session that highlighted the intersection of policy, innovation, and collaboration.

The 30-minute interview delved into the core objectives of the Nigerian Environmental Society, the achievements of Dr. Bassey’s trailblazing presidency and actionable pathways for fostering growth in the sector.

Dr. Bassey, the first and only female president in the history of the NES, reflected on her tenure, underscoring significant milestones she spearheaded.

“I introduced the digitisation of membership applications to enhance accessibility and engagement within the society.”

“It was a step towards modernising our processes and attracting a broader demographic,” she said.

Additionally, she emphasized the importance of fostering partnerships between the public and private sectors to tackle pressing environmental challenges.

Her leadership also prioritized the expansion of collaborative frameworks to boost the sector’s impact and sustainability.

Dr. Bassey further stressed that environmental action should be prioritized at all levels of government, from federal to local.

“Environmental initiatives not only safeguard our future but also create critical employment opportunities, especially for young people,” she stated.

The session also educated viewers on the vital role the environmental sector plays in national development.

By addressing climate change, waste management, and resource conservation, the sector can drive economic growth while preserving Nigeria’s ecological heritage.

Eromona Michael, in his closing remarks, commended Dr. Bassey for her visionary contributions and reiterated the importance of leveraging such conversations to inspire policy reforms and innovation.
