
Omoba Peju Akinyemi, founder and CEO of Ikorodu Oga Radio, commemorated his 50th birthday on Saturday, November 23, 2024, with a dual-purpose event in Ikorodu.
The celebration featured the public presentation of his book, The Impact of Community Radio, alongside the announcement of a lecture series aimed at promoting the role of grassroots media in societal transformation.
As a pioneer of Nigeria’s first online community radio station, Akinyemi used the occasion to reflect on the platform’s eight-year journey, emphasizing its role in enhancing local communication, advancing democratic values, and driving development within the Ikorodu Division and beyond.
The event attracted prominent figures, including HRM Oba Bashir Aremu Shotonwa, Sekumade of Ipakodo; HRM Oba Semiudeen Kasali, Orimadegun Adeboruwa of Igbogbo; Hon. Wasiu Adesina, Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Central; Dr Saheed Ibikunle, who representated Senator Tokunbo Abiru and other key stakeholders.
In his address, Akinyemi expressed gratitude to attendees and shared the inspiration behind the book, which chronicles the establishment of Ikorodu Oga Radio in 2016.
“This book tells the story of how community-focused media transforms societies”.
“It’s a testament to vision, resilience, and the power of grassroots voices,” he said.
He also launched a lecture series titled The Impact of Community Radio in Tourism Development, Security Development, and Cultural Renaissance.
The initiative aims to educate stakeholders on the critical role of grassroots media in addressing local challenges and preserving cultural heritage.
Guest speaker Mr. Olayinka Adaguna, representing Dr. Olalekan Ogunbanwo, former Permanent Secretary of Lagos Television, delivered an insightful lecture on the significance of community radio.
He highlighted its indispensable role in fostering security, unity, and public awareness.
Adaguna noted that community radio strengthens local security by broadcasting preventive information and encouraging collaboration with law enforcement.
He lauded Ikorodu Oga Radio for its exemplary efforts in sensitizing residents about critical issues, including security and education.
“This platform has set a standard for community-focused communication,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the achievements of Ikorodu Oga Radio, Akinyemi reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the platform’s impact.
“This milestone is both a celebration of our past achievements and a call to action to build a stronger future for community development,” he said.
The highlight of the day was the unveiling of The Impact of Community Radio, a publication offering invaluable insights for media practitioners, scholars, and policymakers.
The event concluded with cultural displays, music, and tributes, celebrating Omoba Peju Akinyemi’s legacy as a media pioneer and advocate for grassroots empowerment.
