In a spirited display of community engagement and youth development, the Executive Chairman of Ijede Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba, officially inaugurated the 2024 Chairman’s Cup at Anwar-ul-Islam Primary School, Ijede.
The 5-a-side football tournament, slated to span three weeks, aims to uncover young football talents, foster unity, and promote healthy competition among youths in the region.
The opening ceremony saw an impressive gathering of dignitaries, including Hon. Kabiru Femi (Vice Chairman, Ijede LCDA), Hon. Femi Olamiwonu (Secretary to the Local Government), Hon. Oyedele Adenuga (Supervisor for Youth and Sports), Hon. Sarumi (APC Chairman, Ijede LCDA), members of the Legislative Council, ward chairpersons, CDA/CDC representatives, management staff, and the headmistress of Anwar-ul-Islam Primary School, among others.
The competition is expected to foster communal ties, build sportsmanship, and inspire youths to pursue their aspirations through the unifying power of football.
In her address before the kickoff, Hon. Gbadebo-Alogba thanked all attendees and underscored the impactful role of sports in driving transformation.
“This tournament is more than a competition; it is a platform to discover talents, build camaraderie, and strengthen the unity that binds our community,” she remarked.
She also commended the dedication of the Agric Department, the Football Association coaches, and trainers who worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success.
Reiterating her administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, the chairman stated, “We will continue to invest in initiatives that prioritize our youths and strengthen the growth and development of Ijede LCDA.”
Hon. Oyedele Adenuga, Supervisor for Youth and Sports, underscored the importance of harmony and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
“Football unites us. It is crucial that all participants play with integrity and avoid disputes, win or lose. ”
“This attitude will encourage continued support for such initiatives,” he advised.
Following the official launch of the competition by the council chairman, the opening match between Ahmadiyya FC and CMS All-Stars FC concluded in a captivating 1-1 draw, paving the way for an exciting tournament ahead.
Football enthusiasts filled the venue, cheering passionately and creating an atmosphere of unity and excitement.
The 16 participating teams, grouped into four clusters, are as follows:
Group A: Tinubu Estate FC, Igbe Ogunro FC, Ojikutu FC, Oke-Eletu 1 FC
Group B: Igbopa FC, Igbe-Oloja FC, Ipakan FC, Ajeologo Yusuf FC
Group C: Ahmadiyyah FC, CMS-All Stars 1 FC, Palm Avenue FC, Palace FC
Group D: Oke-Eletu 2 FC, Anjorin FC, CMS-All Stars 2 FC, Sholumade FC.
With the active participation of the community, the Chairman’s Cup exemplifies Ijede LCDA’s commitment to youth development and community empowerment.
