The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has raised concerns over the increasing installation of unauthorized gates, particularly in the Lekki axis.
These installations, which often lack proper approval from the Ministry, have disrupted traffic flow, hindered emergency response efforts, and compromised public safety.
In light of these challenges, the Ministry has announced a firm directive to address the situation, emphasizing the need for strict compliance with the State’s regulations on gated streets and barriers.
According to the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, all gates or barriers installed without prior authorization from the Lagos State Government are deemed illegal and will be removed.
Residents and Community Development Associations (CDAs) responsible for such installations have been given a seven-day ultimatum to dismantle unauthorized gates.
Failure to comply will attract enforcement actions, including fines and removal, in accordance with existing laws.
Mandatory Guidelines for Approved Gates and Barriers
The Ministry also outlined specific guidelines for gates or barriers that have received prior approval:
1. Operating Hours:
Gates or barriers on public roads must remain fully open to allow free access and traffic flow between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM daily.
2. Security Management:
Approved gates must be manned by security personnel employed by the respective CDAs.
Between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM, gates may remain closed but must be immediately accessible in emergencies to facilitate the prompt movement of first responders.
The Honourable Commissioner called on all residents and CDAs to ensure adherence to these guidelines to maintain a safe, efficient, and connected transportation network across Lagos State.
He warned that non-compliance would result in punitive measures, including fines and further enforcement actions.
The Lagos State Government urges residents in gated streets or areas with barriers to comply with these directives, emphasizing that such measures are essential to fostering a safer and more accessible transportation system for all.
With this initiative, the Ministry of Transportation aims to balance the needs for community security with the overarching goal of ensuring seamless mobility and public safety across Lagos State.
