SANWO-OLU HOSTS 2024 LAGOS BOAT REGATTA, CELEBRATES LAGOS WATERWAYS AS HERITAGE & LIFELINE ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday, December 21, 2024, hosted the highly anticipated 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta at the Lagos waterfront.

Themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” the event celebrated the vital role of Lagos waterways in preserving cultural heritage and advancing tourism.

In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the symbolic importance of the regatta, describing it as a powerful representation of the state’s identity.

“This boat regatta embodies our essence and signifies a transformation and revival of our culture,” he said.

“It showcases our unwavering commitment to developing tourism in Lagos through our waterways.”

With one-third of Lagos surrounded by water, the Governor reiterated the strategic importance of waterways, not only as a means of transportation but also as an essential ecosystem supporting tourism and economic growth.

He outlined his administration’s dedication to optimizing these resources for the benefit of Lagosians and visitors alike.

The event was marked by vibrant displays of various watercraft and infrastructure from the five divisions of Lagos State: Ikorodu, Ikeja, Badagry, Lagos Island, and Epe.

Each division brought unique cultural presentations, showcasing traditional designs and regalia that highlighted their rich heritage.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the efforts of stakeholders, cultural groups, and participants, noting that the regatta offered a mix of education and entertainment.

“Today, we witnessed displays of various sizes of water infrastructure and boat regattas from the five divisions of Lagos. It was a day filled with fun and a greater appreciation for the beauty our waterways offer,” he remarked.

The event drew attendees from across Lagos and beyond, providing an opportunity for families and tourists to experience the splendour of Lagos’ waterways and its cultural significance.

The Governor expressed his hope that the regatta would inspire further interest in water-based tourism and a collective commitment to protecting Lagos’ aquatic heritage.

As Lagos continues to evolve as a global city, events like the Lagos Boat Regatta reaffirm its position as a leader in sustainable tourism and cultural preservation.
