The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a circulating false report claiming that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, directed citizens to physically assault or throw objects at police officers during stop-and-search operations or when asked to surrender their mobile phones for inspection.
In a statement issued on December 22, 2024, by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the claim was labeled as misleading, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to sow discord between the public and the police.
“The Nigeria Police Force categorically refutes this false report. At no time did the IGP authorize or encourage any act of violence against police officers. Instead, the IGP continues to advocate for adherence to lawful processes and urges citizens to report any police misconduct through established and credible channels,” the statement read.
The FPRO emphasized the IGP’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, underscoring that resolving complaints through lawful and non-violent means is central to building trust between the police and the public.
