LASUSTECH ALUMNI CELEBRATE MAIDEN EXHIBITION, REFLECTING ON ARTISTIC LEGACY ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Department of Arts and Industrial Design, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), marked a historic moment as alumni from its defunct Lagos State Polytechnic era gathered for the maiden edition of their reunion and exhibition.

The one-day event, aptly titled “Convergence,” brought together sculptors, painters, textile designers, and photographers who trained under the department, now known as the Ikorodu Art School.

Held in the Faculty of Environmental Studies during the early weekend of December 2024, the event showcased the profound impact of the department on Nigeria’s creative landscape.

Organized under the leadership of the alumni president, Mr. Abisoye Olowe, and convener Mr. Mutiu Odetunde, the event served as a platform for reunion, reflection, and exhibition of art pieces by former students.

The event highlighted the department’s role in nurturing some of Nigeria’s most talented artists, with works ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and textile design.

Prominent alumni included Kolawole Olojo-Kosoko, Damola Adepoju, Solomon Akinnire, and Fakoya Ibrahim, who continue to gain recognition in the Nigerian and global art scenes.

Acting curator of the exhibition, Mr. Mutiu Odetunde described the occasion as both historic and significant.

“This reunion pop-up exhibition commemorates the institution’s enduring impact on Nigeria’s artistic landscape and showcases the remarkable achievements of its alumni,” Odetunde remarked during his opening address.

The alumni reflected on their time at the institution, paying tribute to late lecturers, including Akeem Balogun, Abidemi Lawal, Matthew Ajayi, and Pamilerin Makanju, who were instrumental in shaping the department. Despite short notice, over 100 alumni attended the event, with 29 art pieces exhibited.

Dr. Kehinde Adepegba, Head of the Department of Fine and Industrial Design, praised the alumni for their achievements and their return to give back to the institution.

“Their coming back gives us the opportunity to interact with them and let them know about the progress we have made in the department,” Dr. Adepegba noted.

While the reunion was a success, challenges included the inability to reach some notable alumni, such as Afropop star Adekunle Gold, who graduated in 2009.

Efforts to engage him were reportedly hindered by his management team, leaving some alumni disheartened.

“We have tried to reach Adekunle Gold on several occasions, but there has been no response,” said Victor Akpan, a fellow alumnus.

Despite these setbacks, the alumni expressed optimism about future events. Plans are already underway for the 2025 edition, with hopes of engaging a larger audience and showcasing works from even more alumni.

The reunion provided a unique opportunity for alumni to reconnect, reminisce, and chart a path forward for their alma mater.

Alumni President Abisoye Olowe, a 1996 graduate, described the gathering as a significant milestone for the department.

“Most of us have not met before, but this gathering presents a good avenue for us to interact and contribute to the growth of the department,” Olowe said.

For sculptor Solomon Akinnire, a 2015/2016 graduate, the reunion was an emotional experience.

“I am so excited to see my former schoolmates again. I look forward to another gathering like this where even more of us will be present,” he shared.

The “Convergence” exhibition emphasized the department’s commitment to fostering creativity, culture, and innovation.

As LASUSTECH evolves into a full-fledged university, the alumni’s commitment to preserving and enhancing its legacy ensures that the institution remains a beacon of artistic excellence in Nigeria.

The inaugural event not only celebrated the artistic journey of its alumni but also laid the foundation for stronger bonds between the institution and its graduates, promising a brighter future for LASUSTECH’s Department of Arts and Industrial Design.
