
The foundation-laying ceremony for the new Oba Sekumade Palace in Ipakodo was held on Friday, January 10, 2025, signifying a major milestone in the community’s development.
The ceremony highlighted the importance of preserving Ipakodo’s cultural and historical legacy while promoting infrastructural development.
The new palace, once completed, is expected to enhance the status of Ipakodo, serving as a symbol of progress and unity within the community and the larger Ikorodu Division.
The project, sponsored by the Ikorodu Division Peace Initiative Limited (IDPIL), attracted the presence of traditional rulers, community leaders, and government representatives.
HRM Oba Bashir Aremu Sotonwa, the Sekumade of Ipakodo, commended Odofin Ogunsanya and the IDPIL team for fulfilling their promise.
“The completion of this ultra-modern palace marks a significant milestone that will enhance our kingdom’s status and drive sociocultural transformation for future generations,” he stated, emphasizing that the project reflects the unity and dedication of Ipakodo’s leaders and stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of IDPIL, Odofin Adewunmi Ogunsanya SAN, the Executive Secretary, Otunba Ganiyu Olusegun Abiru reaffirmed Odofin Ogunsanya’s dedication to the betterment of Ipakodo Kingdom.
Otunba Abiru highlighted IDPIL’s evolving mission beyond community protection and security to include education, healthcare, and environmental development.
He cited the ongoing construction of a modern renal centre as evidence of their commitment to improving lives.
“The reconstruction of the Oba Sekumade Palace is part of our vision to honour the historical and cultural significance of Ipakodo.”
“This palace, scheduled for completion within the next one and a half years, will stand as a testament to the community’s legacy and aspirations,” he stated.
He also urged community members to oversee the project’s progress and revealed plans to install solar-powered streetlights in Ipakodo.
Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, expressed gratitude to IDPIL for its intervention.
“This project demonstrates a commendable partnership between the council and stakeholders like IDPIL. Despite our financial challenges, your efforts have ensured that Ipakodo continues to grow,” he remarked.
He also commended HRM Oba Bashir Aremu Sotonwa for his visionary leadership, noting the significant progress achieved during his reign.
The palace project, first announced by Odofin Ogunsanya during the 2024 Ipakodo Day celebration, is a cornerstone of IDPIL’s efforts to enhance Ipakodo’s standing within the Ikorodu Division.
The community eagerly anticipates the palace’s commissioning, which is expected to usher in a new era of development and cultural pride.
The event concluded with prayers for the long life and continued leadership of HRM Oba Bashir Aremu Sotonwa, as well as for sustained growth and prosperity in Ipakodo.
