Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, described the emergence of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly as a well-deserved and commendable achievement.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, alongside his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, received the new Speaker and other Principal Officers of the House during a courtesy visit held shortly before the weekly State Executive Council meeting at Lagos House, Ikeja.
The delegation, led by Speaker Meranda, included Deputy Speaker Hon. Mojeed Fatai (Ibeju-Lekki I), Majority Leader Hon. Temitope Adedeji (Ifako Ijaiye I), Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja II), Chief Whip Hon. David Setonji (Badagry II), and Deputy Chief Whip Hon. Sanni Babatunde (Kosofe I).
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated the 44-year-old Meranda, who previously served as Deputy Speaker, on her historic elevation.
He emphasized the importance of her role in fostering a harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government, which he described as crucial for the development of Lagos State.
Meranda assumed the role of Speaker last week following the impeachment of her predecessor, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a robust and collaborative relationship with the Lagos State House of Assembly.
He pledged to work closely with Speaker Meranda, who represents the Apapa I State Constituency, and other Assembly members to uphold the principle of separation of powers, which he described as the foundation of democracy.
The Governor further sought the legislature’s continued support for the swift consideration and passage of bills aimed at implementing his administration’s numerous development programs for Lagos residents.
Governor Sanwo-Olu advised Speaker Meranda to embrace teamwork and leverage her new role to strengthen the relationship between the legislative and executive arms in the interest of public welfare.
He also commended the House members for their steadfast support, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate.
