During a detailed interview with Chief Ganny Awobajo, Chief Editor of Ikorodu News, on January 22, 2025, Mrs. Taibat Abiola Soaga reaffirmed her commitment to improving the lives of residents if elected as the chairperson of Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in the forthcoming council elections.

Mrs. Abiola Soaga obtained her Primary Six Certificate, School Leaving Certificate, NCE in English and Social Studies, and HND in Maritime and Shipping. She is also about to commence her PGD in Pure Transportation.

She has been serving as the Chairman of the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) for Ikorodu LGEA for the past two years and began her voluntary work in 2007, rising from an ordinary member to the position of Chairman. She is a member of the National Women Advocacy of Nigeria (NAWA), where she holds the position of National Party Affairs Manager.

Mrs. Soaga has been active in politics since 1990 and has held numerous positions, including Ward Exco member, LGA Exco member for three terms, Lagos State CWC member, and Divisional Women Leader of the Justice Forum from 2015 to 2019. She was also part of the Acme political movement in 2005.

Additionally, she served as the Chairman of the Agodo Segun Community Association from 2021 to 2023.

A resident of Ikorodu North since 1991, Mrs. Soaga shared her journey of service, emphasizing her dedication to community development and her passion for the welfare of residents.

Reflecting on her first attempt at the chairmanship seat in 2011, she highlighted how this renewed aspiration is anchored on years of experience and wider community acceptance.

“Indigeneity should no longer be a barrier to leadership when one has met all the requirements and demonstrated a genuine commitment to community development,” Mrs. Soaga remarked, addressing past concerns about her candidacy.

Mrs. Soaga, who has served as both a secretary and an ex-officio member in her community, highlighted her achievements in creating employment opportunities for residents by collaborating with industries in the region.

“Just last year, I facilitated 20 employment slots for individuals across the 16 industries in our region,” she shared during the interview.

She noted that her dedication to listening to the needs of residents and addressing their concerns has been her hallmark.

“One of the qualities of a good leader is having a listening ear, and that’s what I have demonstrated over the years,” she said.

Mrs. Soaga’s efforts have garnered support from community elders, many of whom accompanied her to the interview session, demonstrating their confidence in her leadership abilities.

During the interview, Mrs. Soaga commended the present administration, adding that she plans to build on the progress made.

She also unveiled her developmental agenda for the LCDA, which focuses on addressing critical needs and improving the standard of living for residents.

Her plans include improving road infrastructure to ensure easy and safe transportation across the LCDA, enhancing educational facilities to create opportunities for young people, and implementing erosion control measures to prevent flooding.

She also intends to launch empowerment initiatives for the elderly and vulnerable groups, ensuring their welfare is prioritized in her administration.

Concluding the interview, Mrs. Soaga expressed her readiness to serve and her belief in divine guidance and the support of residents in achieving her goals for Ikorodu North LCDA.

“With God by my side and the support of the people, I am confident that I have what it takes to lead and transform Ikorodu North LCDA,” she affirmed.
