The Lagos State Government has called on Community Development Associations (CDAs) and members of the Community Development Advisory Council (CDAC) to take ownership of government projects in their communities as part of efforts to ensure sustainability and foster development.
This charge was given by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje, during a leadership training program held on the 21st of January 2025 at the Alausa Secretariat in Ikeja.
In his address, Dr. Agbaje emphasized the critical role of community engagement in advancing sustainable development initiatives.
Highlighting the successes of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration over the past six years, he noted that aligning government projects with the needs and aspirations of communities has been a core principle, contributing to their effective preservation and management.
“The training underscores the pivotal role of community leaders in cascading government policies and re-evaluating how government can enhance community engagement.”
“This approach will ultimately benefit both the government and the communities,” Dr. Agbaje stated.
He further explained that the training aimed to equip community leaders with the tools needed for strategic partnerships and effective community development.
It also emphasized their role in driving the administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, which prioritizes areas such as Transportation, Health, Education, and Sustainable Development.
Dr. Agbaje assured participants that the Lagos State Government remains committed to empowering grassroots voices through capacity-building initiatives.
By providing education and leadership development opportunities, the government seeks to enable community members to participate actively in decision-making processes and take ownership of sustainability efforts in their localities.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa commended the initiative.
She described the training as a testament to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to community development.
“This training reflects the importance our administration places on communities as critical stakeholders in governance.”
“It also provides an avenue to spread awareness about government policies and programs, ensuring that they are effectively implemented at the grassroots level,” Mrs. Bolarinwa remarked.
The leadership training, which brought together key stakeholders, aims to strengthen the partnership between the state government and community leaders, ensuring that public projects are well-maintained and aligned with local needs.
As the Lagos State Government continues its drive for sustainable community development, the event reinforced the message that local ownership and active participation are essential for the long-term success of government projects.
