The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to commission 10 newly built ferries to boost water transportation, further enhancing the state’s integrated multi-modal transportation system.
This announcement was made during the Joint Citizens’ Media Engagement Forum organized by the Ministry of Information and Strategy at Alausa, Ikeja on the 24th of January 2025.
Speaking at the forum, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, emphasized the importance of leveraging waterways as a safer, cheaper, and more convenient mode of transportation.
He highlighted the locally constructed ferries as a testament to the capabilities of Nigerian engineers, describing them as “world-class innovations that symbolize the possibilities within Nigeria.”
Mr. Omotoso noted that with the addition of these ferries, Lagos now has a fleet of 25 operational boats, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu set to commission the 10 new ferries soon.
This initiative aligns with the state’s vision of reducing travel time and integrating road, rail, and water transportation systems.
During the forum, the Commissioner also outlined significant achievements in the health sector, including the nearing completion of the Ojo General Hospital.
This will be the first general hospital constructed in decades in Lagos State.
Strategically located in Ojo Local Government Area, near key institutions such as Lagos State University and the Ojo military cantonment, the hospital is expected to bridge critical healthcare gaps in the region.
It will serve as a hub for specialized medical services, including surgery, neurology, and general medicine, covering neighbouring communities such as Alimosho and Badagry.
Highlighting the state’s infrastructural strides, Mr. Omotoso detailed projects completed in 2024, including 36 road developments, bridges, and pedestrian infrastructure, with 51 more road projects ongoing.
He also updated progress under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), citing the development of BRT terminals at Abule Egba, Iyana Ipaja, and Ajah, as well as the near completion of the Addo Road Junction Pedestrian Bridge.
Alhaji Monsur Olowosago, Publisher of Oriwu Sun Newspaper, commended the Lagos State Government’s partnership with community media.
He urged greater patronage and support for grassroots media practitioners to amplify government policies and achievements under the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Agenda.
He applauded the Ministry of Information and Strategy for organizing the forum, emphasizing the vital role of community media as a feedback mechanism and a bridge between the government and the people.
Olowosago also encouraged the government to expand initiatives that address challenges raised by community journalists to foster better governance.
Lagosians can expect continued strides in transportation, healthcare, and infrastructure as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration pursues its goal of a safer, smarter, and more sustainable state.
