LAGOS ENFORCES FINES FOR TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS WITH SMART TECHNOLOGY ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to enhance road safety and traffic management by unveiling additional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) across four strategic routes in the state.

The initiative, announced by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, at a media briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday, also marks the commencement of strict enforcement of traffic rules, particularly red light violations and overspeeding.

According to Osiyemi, violators of red light infractions will be fined ₦20,000, while overspeeding will attract a penalty of ₦50,000.

The move aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a smarter, safer, and more efficient transportation network in Lagos.

The state government has designated specific routes with regulated speed limits for compliance: Alapere-Ogudu Road – 80 km/h; Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way – 60 km/h; Allen Avenue Road Junction – 60 km/h; and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road – 60 km/h

To ensure compliance, the ITS comprises Checkpoint Sites for Speed Detection and E-Police Sites for Traffic Violations, strategically positioned to monitor road activities.

Checkpoint Sites for Speed Detection: Alapere-Ogudu Road (80km/h limit); Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (60km/h limit)

E-Police Sites for Traffic Violations: Allen Avenue Road Junction; Nurudeen Olowopopo Road

These E-Police sites will detect offenses such as running red lights, lane indiscipline, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways using high-definition cameras and real-time monitoring systems.

The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) integrates advanced information, communication, sensing, control, and computer technologies to monitor and manage traffic in real-time.

It serves as a virtual traffic enforcement officer, ensuring compliance even when physical officers are not present.

Osiyemi emphasized that this initiative is not a revenue-generation drive but a life-saving measure aimed at curbing reckless driving and reducing road accidents.

“Motorists who violate traffic laws will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) detailing the nature of the violation and the corresponding fines,” he stated.

The Commissioner highlighted several benefits of the new traffic enforcement system: Improved Road Safety – Reduces reckless driving and traffic violations; Efficient Traffic Flow – Minimizes congestion through better monitoring.

Data-Driven Decision Making – Helps government agencies plan based on real-time data; and Transparency in Enforcement – Reduces human interference and potential disputes.

He urged all private motorists, commercial drivers, and transport unions to obey the traffic laws, maintain lane discipline, and drive responsibly.

The Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Tunbosun Alake, noted that the ITS initiative was developed in partnership with the private sector as part of Lagos State’s broader vision for a technologically advanced and livable city.

Also speaking, Olawale Musa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, reiterated that while violators will face fines, the initiative is primarily a corrective measure to foster a culture of road safety and prevent unnecessary loss of lives and property.

With enforcement taking effect immediately, Lagosians are urged to embrace the new system as a step toward a more orderly and efficient urban transportation network.
