LAGOS ASSEMBLY ADVANCES BILL TO ESTABLISH STATE RESEARCH TRUST FUND ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Lagos State House of Assembly has advanced a bill seeking to establish a State Research Trust Fund, referring it to a sub-committee for further review.

The Speaker of the House, Princess Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, emphasized the importance of research in driving innovation and development, urging tertiary institutions in the state to take an active role in meaningful research efforts.

Sponsored by Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, the bill successfully scaled its second reading on the floor of the House. The proposed legislation aims to create a structured funding mechanism for research, ensuring effective allocation, management, and administration of research funds for the state’s progress.

Supporting the bill, lawmakers commended the sponsor, highlighting its potential to boost innovation, economic growth, and technological advancement in Lagos.

Yishawu underscored the significance of the bill, stating that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub, must remain at the forefront of scientific and technological development. He argued that a well-funded research framework would enhance governance, promote industrialization, and position the state as a leader in innovation.

While some lawmakers raised concerns about the bill’s funding sources, they acknowledged its necessity. Hon. Noheem Adams stressed that sustained research funding would empower scholars to make groundbreaking discoveries that benefit society.

He illustrated this by referencing the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell, noting how research-driven innovations have transformed daily life.

The ad-hoc committee assigned to the bill is expected to refine its provisions before further legislative processes.
