Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commissioned an 18-classroom prototype block at Odogunyan Junior Grammar School, Ikorodu, as part of his administration’s commitment to transforming the educational sector in Lagos State.

The newly completed structure, equipped with modern learning facilities, marks a significant step toward providing students with a conducive learning environment.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, was attended by top government officials, education stakeholders, and traditional leaders, including Hon. Gbolahan Ogunleye (Member representing Ikorodu Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly), Mrs. Adenike Adekanye (Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II), SSA to the Governor on Local Government and Rural Development; Mr Babatunde Durojaiye; Mr. Adewusi Sulaimon (representing the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu North LCDA), Bola Adaramola (Councillor representing Odogunyan in Ikorodu North LCDA), and the Baale of Odogunyan, Alhaji Ojuemoren Kamorudeen.

In his keynote address, Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Rural Development, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to strengthening educational infrastructure as a key driver of social and economic growth.

“The commissioning of this newly constructed block of classrooms at Odogunyan Junior Grammar School represents a critical step in our administration’s commitment to socio-economic development through education,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

“Prior to this intervention, the school faced significant challenges, including dilapidated infrastructure and inadequate learning facilities. Today, this project stands as proof of our resolve to address these challenges and create a conducive learning environment.”

The governor emphasized that education remains a key pillar of his administration’s THEMES agenda, adding that similar projects are being commissioned across 13 other schools in Lagos State to ensure equitable access to quality education.

Mrs. Adenike Adekanye, Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District II, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his proactive approach to educational development in Lagos State.

She recalled how she personally drew the governor’s attention to the deplorable state of the school, leading to the swift intervention.

“When I informed Mr. Governor about the condition of this school, he assured me that he would provide a befitting prototype structure for Odogunyan. Today, we are witnessing the fulfillment of that promise—this is truly the dividends of democracy,” Adekanye said.

She further urged school administrators and community stakeholders to ensure the proper maintenance of the new facility so that future generations can benefit from it.

Similarly, Mrs. Adeogo Olubunmi, Principal of Odogunyan Junior Grammar School, expressed deep gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu, describing the project as a major transformation for the school.

“God has used the Lagos State Governor to change the story of our school. We cannot thank him enough for his unwavering commitment to education in the state,” she remarked

Providing technical details, Engr. Oladunni Toheeb, the officer in charge of the project from the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), highlighted the modern features of the new prototype school building: 40 Modern Toilets (20 per floor); Windproof and well-ventilated classrooms to enhance comfort; A spacious school hall on the top floor, capable of accommodating 700 students for special events and examinations (e.g., WAEC); and A smoke detector system for emergency response and safety.

Engr. Toheeb further revealed that Governor Sanwo-Olu had also approved the renovation of an existing school building opposite the new structure, reinforcing the administration’s holistic approach to educational development.

In his concluding remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu charged students to take full advantage of the new facility and strive for academic excellence.

He also called on local leaders and residents of Ikorodu to take ownership of the project by ensuring its proper maintenance and protection.

“To the elders, leaders, and residents of Ikorodu, I charge you to take ownership of this project. Protect it, maintain it, and ensure it serves its purpose for generations to come,” the governor urged.

The commissioning of this state-of-the-art classroom block aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader vision of enhancing educational standards and empowering future generations through quality learning environments.
