Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Tolani Alli-Balogun, has expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and other external examinations.
He called on principals across the state to implement strategic measures aimed at improving students’ academic outcomes.
Speaking at strategic meetings across the six Education Districts, Alli-Balogun noted that despite the significant investments by the Lagos State Government in education, students’ performance in external examinations has not reflected these efforts.
He emphasized that with the substantial resources allocated to the sector, there should be a marked improvement rather than a decline.
As part of measures to address this challenge, the Commissioner announced the discontinuation of mass promotion to the terminal class, stating that only students who meet academic standards would be promoted.
He stressed that this decision aims to instill a culture of academic excellence and hard work among students, ensuring that only those who are adequately prepared advance to their final year.
“This strategic approach is expected to improve the overall performance of students and raise the standards of education in the state,” Alli-Balogun stated.
Furthermore, the Commissioner underscored the importance of co-curricular activities in fostering holistic student development.
He directed school administrators to revive school programs that enhance students’ learning experiences, both academically and physically.
Among the initiatives he outlined are: Implementing interactive learning techniques, including hands-on activities, experiments, and projects.
Reviving sports and physical education programs to promote teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness.
Encouraging students to express creativity through arts, music, drama, and other extracurricular outlets.
Empowering students to take ownership of their learning through leadership roles in clubs, projects, and school organizations.
Alli-Balogun reiterated that these measures would create a balanced educational environment that prepares students for success beyond academics.
He urged school administrators to adopt innovative teaching methods and ensure that students receive a comprehensive education that supports both intellectual and personal growth.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving education quality and called on all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and students, to collaborate in achieving better academic outcomes.
