LASG CRACKS DOWN ON TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS, TO INSTALL 3,000 E-POLICE CAMERAS ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to install approximately 3,000 e-police and speed limit cameras across the state to enhance traffic law enforcement and ensure road safety.

The Director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Engr. Akin-George Fashola made this disclosure on Tuesday while speaking on Lagos Transport Trends and Perspectives, a program sponsored by the State’s Ministry of Transportation on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM.

According to Engr. Fashola, speed limit cameras have already been deployed in strategic locations, including Alapere-Ogudu Road—where the speed limits are set at 80km/h inbound Alausa and 60km/h inbound Iyana Oworo—and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where the limit is 60km/h.

He further stated that e-police cameras are currently in place at Allen Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road in Ikeja to monitor red light violations and other traffic infractions. He urged motorists to comply with the speed limits and adhere to warning signs installed at these locations.

Engr. Fashola emphasized that violators of speed limits would be fined Fifty Thousand Naira (₦50,000). However, those who believe they have been wrongly fined can contest the penalty by providing evidence.

When asked if commercial vehicles are exempt from this enforcement, he clarified that about 50 commercial buses are apprehended daily for various traffic violations, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring road discipline among all categories of motorists.

In addition to the new traffic enforcement measures, the Lagos State Government has introduced an online roadworthiness recertification system for pre-existing vehicle owners.

This initiative enables vehicle owners to renew their roadworthiness certificates online without visiting a VIS office, making the process more convenient and efficient.

Engr. Fashola also revealed that the VIS now offers an auto verification service for individuals purchasing used vehicles. This service provides a detailed history of a vehicle, allowing buyers to make informed decisions before purchasing second-hand automobiles.

He urged Lagos residents to visit the VIS website or any of the 45 VIS centres across the state for further information and assistance regarding these initiatives.

The Lagos State Government’s latest efforts underscore its dedication to road safety, traffic law enforcement, and modernized vehicle inspection services to improve transportation efficiency within the state.
