Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, arrived at the Independence Bridge, Bonny Camp, this morning to personally inspect the ongoing repair work being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works.
The visit comes in response to the severe traffic congestion experienced across Lagos yesterday, which left many commuters stranded for hours.
In a heartfelt address to Lagosians, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his deep regret for the disruption caused by the roadworks, acknowledging the frustration and delays suffered by residents.

He reassured the public that the government remains committed to easing the traffic situation while ensuring the critical repair work is completed efficiently.
“I sincerely apologize to all Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion experienced yesterday. I understand the frustration, delays, and disruption this has caused in your daily lives. As someone who also moves through this city, I feel your pain, and we do not take your patience and resilience for granted,” the Governor stated.
He explained that the decision to repair the Independence Bridge was not made overnight but had been in planning for over three years due to concerns over its structural integrity. He emphasized that delaying the intervention further would have posed significant risks to public safety.
While acknowledging the inconvenience, Governor Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that measures are being taken to mitigate the traffic impact.

He noted that additional traffic monitoring officials and security personnel have been deployed to ensure smoother vehicular movement.
The state government is also working closely with relevant agencies to improve traffic management strategies.
Beyond immediate traffic solutions, the Governor encouraged businesses and organizations to adopt flexible work arrangements such as remote work and hybrid models.
He emphasized that a temporary shift in work culture could significantly reduce traffic congestion and enhance public convenience during the repair period.
“Lagosians, I ask for your continued patience and cooperation. Your safety remains our priority, and we are committed to ensuring that our city remains not only a hub of progress but also a place where infrastructure serves the people effectively,” he said.

As the repair work continues, the Lagos State Government reassures residents that all efforts will be made to minimize disruptions while ensuring the bridge is restored to optimal conditions for safe use.
