The Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of General Hospital, Ijede, Dr. Olufemi Aletan, has lauded the nurses at the facility for their unwavering enthusiasm, commitment, and dedication in delivering quality healthcare, in a heartfelt recognition of selfless service and professional excellence.
Dr. Aletan expressed his admiration during a commemorative event held within the hospital premises to mark the 2025 International Nurses Week, a global celebration that runs annually from May 6th to 12th in honour of nurses’ indispensable role in healthcare delivery.
He noted that the nurses at General Hospital, Ijede have consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication, particularly in challenging situations, which has significantly contributed to the hospital’s reputation for excellent patient care.
The week-long celebration was themed “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies,” in alignment with the global focus for the year 2025. The theme underscores the importance of investing in nurses’ health, well-being, and professional development to enhance societal health outcomes and economic resilience.
Activities organized to commemorate the week included a grand opening ceremony featuring a presentation on the year’s theme, followed by a variety of engaging and impactful events. These included a free medical outreach program targeted at Lagosians, aiming to promote community health, as well as a food competition and a quiz segment among various wards within the hospital.
The celebrations reached a climax at the grand finale, where camaraderie, knowledge-sharing, and appreciation for the nursing profession took center stage.
Dr. Aletan emphasized the need to continually support and motivate nurses, stating that their wellness is crucial not just for the healthcare sector but for the overall development of any nation.
“The dedication of our nurses is second to none. They are the backbone of our healthcare system, and this celebration is a small way to honour their immense contribution,” Dr. Aletan concluded.
International Nurses Week is celebrated annually across the globe to honour the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale and to recognize the contributions of nurses who serve as the lifeline of healthcare systems.
