IKORODU LG PARTNERS  DOWN SYNDROME FOUNDATION FOR ‘MPOWER HER’ WORKSHOP TO COMBAT GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS WITH DISABILITIES ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Day One of the “MPOWER HER – My Voice, My Power, My Safety” empowerment and training workshop kicked off on May 14th, 2025, at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat, in a powerful display of advocacy and inclusivity.

The initiative, organised by the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN), in partnership with Ikorodu Local Government, is focused on ending gender-based violence against women and girls with intellectual disabilities.

The first day featured a stakeholders’ awareness meeting, drawing participation from community leaders, health advocates, security agencies, civil society organisations, and government officials.

Representing the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu LG, Hon. Wasiu Adesina, the Council Secretary Alhaji Lateef Afini delivered the welcome remarks.

“Whatever is of importance, like this health and empowerment program brought to Ikorodu Local Government, the council is always ready to support,” Afini stated, reaffirming the council’s dedication to social inclusion.

He further conveyed the Chairman’s commitment to inclusive governance, saying:

“Our administration firmly believes that no one should be left behind—especially those living with disabilities. We are proud to partner with credible organizations like the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria to advance the cause of vulnerable groups in our community.”

“Programs like this go beyond advocacy; they give our people a voice, equip them with real tools, and build a safer, more just society for all.”

“Ikorodu LG is not just providing a venue—we are providing solidarity. This initiative aligns with our broader development goals, which include empowering the marginalized, protecting the vulnerable, and promoting a culture of dignity, equality, and mutual respect.”

The stakeholders’ session served as a platform to sensitize the public on the rights and vulnerabilities of girls and women with intellectual disabilities.

Key dignitaries present included Deaconess Busola Isikalu, Iyaloja-General of Ikorodu Division; Alhaja Rashidat Bello, APC Woman Leader in Ikorodu; and Elder Ogunjimi Yekinni, Chairman of the Ikorodu Central Community Development Committee (CDC), among others.

Mrs. Nike Denis, the National Administrator of DSFN, educated attendees on the nature of Down syndrome—a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21—and its physical, cognitive, and health impacts.

“While individuals with Down syndrome may face intellectual and developmental challenges, they can lead fulfilling lives with proper support, therapy, and advocacy,” she stated.

She also detailed DSFN’s mission since its inception in 2001, which includes inclusive education, therapy, family support, medical assistance, advocacy, vocational training, and community integration.

The Foundation collaborates globally with partners like the International Disability Alliance (IDA), ATscale, and UNOPS to advance the rights and welfare of people with Down syndrome.

A key highlight of the session was an interactive Q&A, where guests posed critical questions and received detailed responses on best practices for protecting and empowering people with intellectual disabilities.

The program continues with Day Two on May 15th, 2025, where over 50 beneficiaries will be trained and empowered. According to Mr. Innocent Okuru, Project Manager of DSFN,

“The empowerment day will include the distribution of electronic alert gadgets designed to help beneficiaries raise alarms in emergency situations, ensuring their safety and independence.”

The MPOWER HER workshop reflects a broader call to action for inclusive development and sets a model for future collaborations in safeguarding the rights of women and girls living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
