In a decisive move to enhance environmental protection, prevent building collapse, and promote public well-being, the Lagos State Government has announced new working hour restrictions for construction activities across the state.
Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, disclosed the directive during a press briefing on Thursday at the Ministry’s headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja.
According to the new regulation, all building construction work in Lagos State is now restricted to the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The restriction, which takes immediate effect, is part of the government’s broader efforts to instill discipline and ensure safer construction practices within the state.
Dr. Olumide stressed that strict compliance is mandatory for all stakeholders in the building and construction industry. He further revealed that relevant government agencies have been mandated to enforce the order and sanction violators appropriately.
“Construction activities should not continue into the late hours of the night or begin at inappropriate early hours. This restriction is essential to curtail noise pollution, reduce risk of accidents, and ensure overall safety at construction sites,” he said.
The commissioner, however, noted that exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Contractors or developers seeking to operate outside the stipulated hours must formally apply for special consideration, and such applications will be evaluated on their individual merits.
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Dr. Olumide highlighted that the restriction is aimed at “protecting the environment, combating the menace of building collapse, and promoting social well-being and wellness” among residents.
He urged members of the public to act as partners in progress by reporting construction sites that flout the new directive, thereby supporting the government’s commitment to a safer and more organized urban environment.
The Lagos State Government reiterates its dedication to sustainable urban development and called on all professionals and artisans in the building sector to align with the new order for the good of all.
