LAGOS GOVERNMENT STRENGTHENS LOCAL COUNCILS WITH REFORMS, STAFF BENEFITS, AND SANITATION PROJECTS ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Reinforcing his administration’s commitment to effective grassroots governance, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has recorded significant progress in local council administration, staff welfare, and environmental hygiene across Lagos State.

These achievements were highlighted by the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing commemorating the second anniversary of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s second term, held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

Mr. Robert stated that the Ministry has strengthened the administrative and developmental capacities of the 57 LGAs and LCDAs, approving 85 capital projects aligned with the State’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda.

To support bereaved families of public servants, the Ministry disbursed over ₦775 million in insurance claims to 271 families of deceased staff from Local Governments and SUBEB, ensuring dignified and timely support for those who lost loved ones in service.

To promote accountability, the Ministry issued 14 administrative circulars and approved 43 special and 12 church licenses while supplying 176 marriage documents to Local Councils to facilitate legal matrimonial processes. Oversight activities led to the resolution of 104 petitions, reinforcing transparency and public confidence.

In addressing public health and sanitation, the Ministry launched aggressive campaigns across all 57 LGAs/LCDAs to promote cleaner market environments.

These included drainage desilting, proper waste management, and mandatory hygiene standards for food vendors—leading to a drop in disease risks such as cholera.

Additionally, 15 public toilets with boreholes were built in key markets like Abiola, Akodo, Oja-Oba, and Ogungbe, with 98 more markets set to benefit.

The Ministry also partnered with the Office of the First Lady and COWLSO to hold Market Sanitation and Security Seminars at Sabo Market (Yaba LCDA) and the BOS Modern Market (Ikosi-Isheri LCDA), equipping traders with knowledge to uphold hygiene and safety standards.

The Commissioner affirmed that the Ministry remains committed to strengthening local institutions, deepening public service delivery, and fostering inclusive development in every community across Lagos.
