Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the procurement of 11 units of 500kVA transformers for distribution to various rural areas, marking a significant upgrade in the state’s rural electrification program.
In a bold step to further improve electricity supply in underserved communities across Lagos State, this strategic initiative reinforces the administration’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in grassroots communities.
The announcement was made by Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Rural Development, during the Ministerial Press Briefing of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Office of Rural Development, held on May 22, 2025, at Alausa, Ikeja.
Dr. Agbaje revealed that the procurement of these high-capacity transformers is part of Mr. Governor’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure to rural communities.
He emphasized that the upgraded 500kVA capacity will significantly enhance electricity quality and reliability, compared to the previously distributed 300kVA transformers.
“Prior to this, with the gracious approval of Mr. Governor, the Office of Rural Development, through the Centre for Rural Development (CERUD), had distributed 63 transformers of 300kVA to various rural communities,” Dr. Agbaje stated.
“The decision to increase the transformer grade demonstrates the administration’s resolve to provide sustainable and high-quality electricity solutions to the people of Lagos, especially in underserved areas.”
The Special Adviser also noted that the transformers will soon be dispatched to selected rural communities following technical assessments and community needs analysis, ensuring equitable distribution and impact.
This intervention is part of a broader strategy by the Sanwo-Olu administration to bridge the infrastructure gap in rural communities and support economic activities through stable electricity supply.
