TENANCY LAW: LAGOS GOVERNMENT DISOWNS FALSE PUBLICATION, CLARIFIES 2015 LAW REMAINS IN FORCE ~ INN Nigeria ☆

The Lagos State Government has officially disowned a recent viral online publication that falsely claimed an update to the Lagos State Tenancy Law, describing the report as baseless, fabricated, and a calculated attempt by fraudulent individuals to mislead and extort unsuspecting members of the public.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday and signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, the government clarified that the Lagos State Tenancy Law of 2015 remains the current legal framework in effect.

The statement further stressed that no official update has been made to the law as falsely claimed in the online report.

“The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to a fabricated online publication stating that the Lagos State Tenancy Law has been updated to better protect tenants and regulate landlord practices.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Lagos State Government wishes to state unequivocally that the said publication did not emanate from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA),” Odunuga-Bakare affirmed.

She further noted that while discussions are ongoing about revising the tenancy law, the process is still at the legislative stage.

“The bill for a new Tenancy Law is under due consideration at the Lagos State House of Assembly and yet to be passed into law. The public will be duly informed through official channels when the new law is enacted,” she added.

Odunuga-Bakare also disclosed that the Ministry of Housing is presently engaging various stakeholders across the state—including legal practitioners under the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Community Development Committees (CDCs), Community Development Associations (CDAs), and traditional rulers across the five IBILE divisions—to discuss key aspects of housing regulation.

These engagements are focused on addressing monthly rental payment challenges and creating a clearer, more transparent framework for real estate transactions.

She advised Lagosians to disregard the misleading publication and urged the public to rely only on verified information from official government sources to avoid being misled by unscrupulous actors.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in real estate transactions while working to create a housing environment that is fair to both tenants and landlords.
