FUNMI BASORUN CELEBRATES COMMUNITY MEDIA PIONEER, PRINCE GANNY AWOBAJO, AT 79 ~ INN Nigeria ☆

Prince Ganny Awobajo, the Chief Publisher of Nigeria’s first community newspaper, is being celebrated as he marks his 79th birthday.

In a heartfelt message of goodwill, respected Ikorodu Apex Leader, and first Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Asiwaju (Chief) Reuben Olorunfunmi Basorun, has extended warm congratulations to him.

Speaking to Ikorodu News Network (INN) on the 31st of May 2025, Basorun praised Prince Awobajo as a relentless trailblazer in grassroots journalism who laid the foundation for community media practice in Nigeria.

“As a go-getter, Prince Ganny Awobajo is a pioneer who changed the landscape of local news reporting,” Basorun remarked.

“In 1983, when he was launching the Ikorodu Newspaper at the Exclusive Club, the then Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, delegated me to represent him at the event. I had the honour of launching the maiden edition of the newspaper that day.”

Basorun emphasized the newspaper’s unwavering commitment to consistent publication over the decades, noting that its longevity is a testament to Awobajo’s deep passion for journalism and community development.

“Since its inception, the Ikorodu Newspaper has remained steadfast in its mission to inform, educate, and promote progress within the community. That’s because Prince Awobajo is always thirsty for the news,” he said.

“When you talk about local news for the grassroots, Ikorodu Newspaper is number one.”

Asiwaju Basorun concluded his tribute with a prayer for Prince Awobajo, wishing him many more years in good health and service.

“I pray that God will grant him more long life to see 80 years and many more to come,” he added.

Prince Ganny Awobajo’s 79th milestone is being celebrated by admirers and stakeholders in the media space, recognizing his legacy as a beacon of community journalism in Nigeria.
