Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of Government Secondary School, Chibok — the same institution where over 200 girls were abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in 2014, with 70 still missing to this day.
In a heartfelt statement, Obi revealed that prominent activist and Bring Back Our Girls co-convener, Aisha Yesufu, had earlier this month informed him of the alarming situation at the school, which currently has no electricity, no functional laboratories, and only one desktop computer — despite a student population exceeding 2,500.
According to Obi, Aisha Yesufu had made a modest appeal for the provision of two additional computers and solar lighting for the computer room.
While trying to reach Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to arrange a personal visit to Chibok, Obi said he was advised against traveling due to serious security concerns in the area.
To immediately address the situation, Aisha Yesufu facilitated a meeting between Obi and representatives of the Chibok community in Abuja.
During the meeting, Obi presented 10 laptop computers and 3 printers to the leaders, and announced a donation of ₦2 million each for the provision of laboratory equipment, the computer classroom, and a motorised handheld borehole — amounting to a total of ₦6 million.
Obi emphasized that the gesture was not a donation, but “a sincere commitment and a promise to the future of our community.” He assured the leaders that more support would follow.
Beyond the material contributions, Obi used the moment to issue a scathing critique of the nation’s misplaced priorities and chronic misgovernance.
He questioned how a country with such urgent educational and infrastructural deficits continues to invest billions in luxurious projects while essential sectors like education and healthcare remain neglected.
“Occasions like this are deeply disturbing and cause me to reflect and personally question our priorities and the rising costs of misgovernance,” Obi lamented.
“One wonders why we live in a nation where our students don’t have labs, books, or even pencils, while our leaders live in opulence, spending billions to renovate conference centres, build car parks, and furnish new lodges of international standards.”
He concluded with an urgent call for national self-examination, stressing the need to reprioritise development efforts in favour of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
