In a bid to instill a culture of road safety among young minds, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially launched the School Traffic Safety Advocacy Programme (LASTSAP) — an engaging essay competition aimed at primary and secondary school students across the state.
Announcing the initiative on June 16, 2025, LASTMA described the competition as an exciting opportunity for students to share their ideas on how to make Lagos roads safer for everyone, particularly around schools.
The agency emphasized that the programme is not only designed to stimulate awareness and responsibility in young pedestrians but also to inspire innovative suggestions that could influence traffic safety policies in Lagos.
Competition Topics by Category:
Primary School: Every Child has the Right to a Safe Road – Safety Starts with Me
Junior Secondary School: Why is Road Safety Education Important for School Children and Vulnerable Young Adults?
Senior Secondary School: My Role in Ensuring Road Safety
According to a statement released by LASTMA, the essay competition aims to help students explore critical topics such as staying safe near traffic, being a responsible pedestrian, and proposing creative methods to improve safety around schools and the broader community.
The submission window opens on June 16, 2025, and closes on June 25, 2025, giving students just over a week to craft and submit their entries. The best entries will move to the next round of the competition, with finalists emerging from a rigorous selection process.
Grand Finale and Special Recognition:
The final stage of the competition is scheduled for July 14, 2025, and will feature a prestigious event attended by notable dignitaries and road safety stakeholders.
Winners will not only be honored for their exceptional writing and advocacy skills but will also get a rare opportunity to meet the Governor of Lagos State.
“This is your chance to show your amazing writing skills and help make Lagos roads safer for everyone,” LASTMA stated. “Let your imagination run wild!”
The Authority has also encouraged schools, parents, and guardians to motivate their children and wards to participate actively in the contest, as it aligns with the broader goal of building a safer, more responsible society through early education and youth engagement.
More details on how to participate and submit entries are expected to be released through official LASTMA communication channels in the coming days.
