“FROM ROADS TO REFORMS: HON. WASIU ADESINA TRANSFORMS IKORODU WITH INFRASTRUCTURE, WATER, WELFARE, AND EDUCATION LEGACY — REPORTED BY IKORODU NEWS NETWORK (INN)” ~ INN Nigeria ☆

As the final tenure of Hon. Wasiu Adesina as the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, gradually draws to a close, his administration has entered what many describe as a season of accelerated impact.

With a legacy-driven approach, the Adesina-led government has rolled out a series of transformative projects, touching on infrastructure, education, digital empowerment, water access, humanitarian intervention, and local governance reforms.

His final year in office has seen an uptick in visible progress, signalling a deliberate push to complete key initiatives and entrench a sustainable development culture across the council area.

One of the most symbolic developments under his leadership is the ongoing construction of a modern legislative chamber within the council secretariat.

This is the first of its kind in Ikorodu Local Government, providing a permanent and befitting space for grassroots lawmakers to deliberate and legislate in an environment that matches their constitutional importance.

This bold initiative speaks to Adesina’s commitment to institutional reform and structured governance. It also marks a departure from decades of legislative obscurity, where councillors often operate without dedicated facilities.

Alongside this, the main secretariat has undergone extensive upgrades, including external renovation, improved office layouts, and the creation of new administrative spaces that improve both service delivery and employee welfare.

Road construction across Ikorodu Local Government has been widespread and strategic.

Arterial routes like Otambala Road, connecting Ita-Elewa to Aga, have been reconstructed with drainage systems to mitigate flooding and enhance vehicular movement.

The Sabo market entrance, a highly commercial axis, received interlocking pavement installation, addressing longstanding accessibility issues.

Other roads such as Itunmaja, Sanni Arowolo, Solomade, Isikalu Street in Ajina, and Itunla in Ijomu have all witnessed significant intervention.

Residents in these neighbourhoods report easier navigation, reduced erosion, and improved business activities.

These infrastructural strides are widely interpreted as part of Adesina’s final legacy imprint—closing gaps in road connectivity and transforming neglected areas.

Another milestone has been in the provision of potable water. In response to persistent water scarcity in several inner communities, the council, under Adesina’s supervision, embarked on the drilling and commissioning of boreholes across wards.

In December 2024, no fewer than ten boreholes were commissioned within Ward F alone, including the Osholigbeyin-Agbele borehole, which now serves hundreds of residents daily.

These boreholes are powered by solar energy and installed with durable overhead tanks to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Since assuming office in 2017, the Adesina administration has constructed over twenty boreholes in different locations, a feat recognized by community leaders and advocacy groups as a deliberate attempt to address a basic human need.

In the wake of the economic impact caused by the federal government’s removal of fuel subsidies in mid-2023, the Adesina-led council activated its Food Bank Program to distribute palliatives.

In August of that year, more than 3,200 residents, including market women, commercial drivers, vulnerable households, and artisans, received essential food items such as rice, beans, garri, spaghetti, and cooking oil.

The well-organized distribution, held at the council secretariat, was applauded for its transparency and inclusiveness.

The palliative intervention was not just a reactionary move but part of a broader social welfare framework established by the council to cushion residents from economic shocks.

The education sector has also seen commendable attention. In February 2025, the council organized an inter-school debate contest with a ₦1 million cash prize, drawing participants from sixteen public secondary schools.

The program sought to promote public speaking, critical thinking, and confidence among students while encouraging educational excellence.

Earlier in September 2024, Adesina visited five public primary schools in the LGA, including Ijomu Muslim Primary School, United Anglican Primary School, and Methodist Primary School.

During his inspection, he assessed infrastructural needs and pledged to initiate the construction of ICT laboratories and solar-powered classrooms. These visits revealed his administration’s keen interest in digital empowerment and improved learning environments.

The administration’s approach to revenue generation has also undergone transformation. Leveraging technology, the council introduced digital billing systems and conducted a revenue enumeration exercise.

These measures increased the council’s internally generated revenue from a modest ₦5 million to over ₦300 million annually.

With this improved financial standing, the council was able to invest in staff welfare, purchase new utility vehicles, and implement several community projects without waiting for state allocations.

In alignment with Lagos State’s THEMES+ agenda, Hon. Adesina worked closely with Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, to map and accelerate development across rural communities in Ikorodu.

Through joint assessment tours and data-driven planning, several inner roads and underserved communities were prioritized for interventions that previously eluded them for decades.

The administration’s achievements were validated when the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) interviewed Hon. Adesina in 2024.

During the interview, he cited 100 completed road projects, more than 20 functional boreholes, active youth empowerment programs, grants to artisans, and increased bursary support for students.

He also highlighted staff capacity development, provision of working incentives, and improved security through support to local vigilantes and law enforcement agencies.

Testimonies from community members affirm the administration’s positive impact. A resident of Ward C, Mrs. Mobolaji Adeyemi, expressed relief that her children no longer had to wake at dawn to fetch water.

Chief Salau Odunsi, Baale of Ajina, noted that his community had not witnessed such attention in over ten years. Youth advocate Comrade Kemi Arigbabu commended the education reforms and digital focus, describing them as a benchmark for future leaders.

Market leader Mrs. Fausat Ajani praised the food bank initiative as a lifeline during one of the country’s most trying periods.

Hon. Wasiu Adesina’s leadership has been marked by vision, resilience, and responsiveness.

From the foundation of legislative reforms to infrastructural revival, social support, and institutional modernization, his administration has built more than just structures—it has restored public confidence in local governance.

Though his time in office is nearing its end, the blueprint he has laid down continues to shape Ikorodu’s path to inclusive growth and sustainable development.
