LAGOS, July 5, 2025 — The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, has issued a precautionary advisory to residents of rural communities across Lagos State, urging them to straighten and clear all blocked drainages as heavy rainfall continues across the state.
Dr. Agbaje, in a public statement, expressed concern over the rising risk of flooding due to poorly maintained or clogged drainage channels, especially in remote and underdeveloped areas.
He emphasized that the continuous rainfall could worsen environmental conditions if proactive measures are not taken by community members.
“Our rural communities must take the lead in safeguarding their environment. Bad or neglected drainage systems can quickly lead to flooding, erosion, and damage to homes and farmlands. This is the time to act—before it becomes a disaster,” he stated.
He advised residents to regularly monitor and clear drainage paths around their homes and streets, cautioning that even minor blockages can escalate into major problems when water has no proper route to flow.
Dr. Agbaje reiterated that while the state government continues to invest in rural infrastructure and environmental management, the support and cooperation of local residents are crucial in maintaining these efforts.
“As a government, we are doing our part. But it’s a shared responsibility. Communities must own their environment and ensure that drainages are not just constructed but also maintained,” he added.
The Special Adviser concluded by appealing to community leaders, youth groups, and rural development committees to mobilize local action in advance of any severe weather incidents.
