The Ikorodu Peculiar Lions Club on Thursday, 31st July 2025, carried out an impactful recycling project at the Oshodi Arts Gallery, Ikorodu, Lagos State, in a bold step towards fostering environmental responsibility and community awareness.
The project, which forms part of the club’s Environmental Protection and Sustainability Initiative, focused on the collection, segregation, and evacuation of recyclable materials, particularly used plastic bottles.
The materials collected will be processed for recycling, helping to reduce environmental pollution, minimize landfill waste, and promote the reuse of valuable resources.
The event was attended by dedicated Lions Club members, including the President, Lion Dr. Oshodi Paul, who hosted the project at his renowned Oshodi Arts Gallery; Immediate Past President, Lion Aminat Sanusi; Lion Abuaja Innocent; Lion Ganiyat Oshodi; Lion Aluko Kayode; Lion Quadri Oladimeji; and Lion Alapafuja Fuad.
The club’s youth wing, the Leos, also participated actively, showcasing their passion and commitment to community service.
Lion Dr. Oshodi Seyi Paul emphasized the urgent need for a collective approach to waste management.
“The issue of environmental degradation is everyone’s concern. Through projects like this, we are not only cleaning our surroundings but also educating our people on the value of recycling and sustainable living.”
“Our aim is to inspire a culture of environmental consciousness that will benefit future generations,” he said.
Immediate Past President Lion Aminat Sanusi highlighted that this recycling initiative builds upon the club’s past environmental campaigns, including plastic bottle collection drives, community clean-ups, and advocacy for waste-to-wealth opportunities.
She noted that beyond its environmental impact, the project also has economic benefits, as recyclable waste can be converted into useful products and serve as a source of income for small-scale recyclers.
Participants at the event worked together to sort collected waste into designated containers, ensuring proper separation for recycling purposes.
The Oshodi Arts Gallery provided not only a venue but also a symbolic reminder of how creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand, as many of its art pieces are made from recycled and upcycled materials.
The Ikorodu Peculiar Lions Club reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining environmental protection programs throughout the year, partnering with local stakeholders, schools, and youth organizations to strengthen community participation.
With environmental challenges such as flooding, blocked drainage channels, and pollution posing serious threats to urban communities, the club’s recycling project serves as a timely reminder that positive change starts at the grassroots level.
The project also aligned with Lions Clubs International’s global environmental service framework, which encourages clubs across the world to implement projects that safeguard natural resources and inspire sustainable lifestyles.
